Job summary

Shaw Bakers is seeking a Packaging Engineer to design packaging solutions that protect products and optimize the supply chain. You’ll take concepts from customer requirements through design, testing, and implementation, partnering with Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Marketing, customers, and suppliers.

This onsite role in San Leandro offers hands-on work to improve packaging performance across production, palletization, storage, and transportation, with a focus on practical problem

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or related field; Master’s degree a plus.
• 2–5 years in packaging development, preferably in food or bakery manufacturing.
• Experience with packaging design, palletization, logistics, and testing.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging for frozen and fresh bakery products.
• Translate customer requirements into packaging solutions balancing performance, cost and timelines.
• Develop packaging that protects products through production, handling, transport, and storage.
• Create prototypes and conduct feasibility studies and testing before implementation.
• Develop pallet configurations for load stability and transportation efficiency.
• Ensure packaging works with standard pallet sizes, warehouse systems, and distribution needs.
• Conduct palletization and transport testing per ISTA and ASTM standards.
• Identify opportunities to improve packaging and logistics efficiency and reduce damage.
• Select and optimize materials based on product requirements, performance and cost.
• Evaluate materials for moisture resistance, breathability, durability, and compatibility.
