Penn Medicine Doylestown Health is seeking a qualified Physician Assistant to join Surgical Services as an OR First Assistant. Under surgeon supervision, you will assist in diverse surgical procedures, manage preoperative and postoperative tasks, and ensure accurate documentation and patient care throughout the perioperative process.

The role requires a PA degree, eligibility for PA licensure, BLS/ACLS, and at least two years in general surgery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physical science is required.
  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program is required.
  • Two years recent general surgery experience preferred; board eligible acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgeon in preoperative care and work-up of patients.
  • Assist in each surgical procedure including prep, openings and closures.
  • Document procedure notes and postoperative orders as directed by the surgeon.
  • Participate in postoperative care and communicate patient progress with the care team.

Education

Bachelor's degree in physical science

Hours: Full Time (Surgical/ OR First Assist Experience Required)

Job Summary:

Under the responsibility and supervision of the surgeon, will first assist in surgical procedures to treat various conditions, illness and injury including assisting in the treatment of any surgical procedures in which the supervising physician or substitute supervising physician is credentialed. This position will include but not limited to first assist, deep and superficial tissue closures, application of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon.

Accountabilities:
  • A. Assists the surgeon in the preoperative care and work-up of patients
  • 1. Confirms operating schedule and summarizes appropriate data prior to surgery.
  • 2. Writes routine preoperative and postoperative orders if requested by surgeon. Completes informative discussion with patient and family regarding the planned procedure and hospital course.
  • 3. Obtains patient’s signature on consent form for procedures
  • 4. Upon request from surgeon, will participate in site marking
  • B. Assists the surgeon in each surgical procedure.
  • 1. Appropriate prep of patient in OR
  • 2. Performs opening and closure as per physician preference
  • 3. Completes procedure note in patient’s chart.
  • 4. Completes postoperative orders.
  • 5. Transfer of patient to PACU or Unit as needed
  • C. Participates in postoperative care of patients being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications.
  • 1. Informs the surgeon of all changes in the patient’s condition.
  • 2. Assesses the patient’s postoperative course, and transcribe/implement indicated therapy as determined by surgical protocol.
  • 3. Communicates patient progress to appropriate consultants.
  • 4. Collects data and writes pertinent progress notes on charts.
  • 5. Communicates with nursing staff to gather information and discuss patient care.
  • 6. Communicates appropriate information to family members at the direction of the surgeon.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in physical science required
  • Master's degree: Must be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant program
  • Two years recent experience in general surgery preferred. Recent Board eligible graduate acceptable preferred
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications:
  • Certified in BLS for healthcare providers and ACLS Required
  • Must be certified or eligible by the NCCPA and Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure
