Job summary

Louis Bay 2nd Public Library and Community Center is seeking a Part Time Library Monitor to help manage behavior and ensure a safe, welcoming environment for patrons, especially minors. Reports to the Head of Technical Services and works on-site at the Louis Bay 2nd Public Library and Community Center.

Hours are up to 29 hours per 2 week pay period, following the public school calendar, with hourly rates of $30.00 for school/ security related experience and $35.00 for current or former law

Qualifications

• Experience working with children is required.
• Experience in a school setting or security role is desirable.
• Must be available during school sessions.
• Ability to respond to emergencies in cooperation with supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Monitor patrons to ensure compliance with Library Rules.
• Manage behavior of un-attended or under-attended minors.
• Build relationships with students emphasizing behavior and mutual respect.
• Explain library policies clearly to patrons.
• Document all behavioral incidents; include security footage when available.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Position:

$35.00 - Current or former law enforcement
Goal:

To have a consistent point person who addresses and manages the behavior of patrons - primarily minors - by providing a positive and visible presence.

Duties:

• Monitor all individuals or groups of patrons visiting all areas of the Library to ensure they are following the Library’s Rules of Conduct and any and all interim procedures currently in place.
• Promptly, consistently, fairly, and firmly ensure that all un-attended or under-attended minors are neither negatively affecting other patrons’ use of the facilities nor interfering with the staff’s ability to perform their duties.
• Build relationships with students emphasizing behavioral expectations and mutual respect.
• Actively follows all library policies and when necessary explains them clearly to patrons.
• Document all behavioral infractions, supplementing the report with security camera footage when available.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Director.

Requirements:

• The employee must work when school is in session; schedule can shift +- minutes:
  • Monday - Thursday, 3:00pm - 6:00pm
  • Friday, 3:00pm - 5:30pm
  • On session days or half days, 1:00pm - 4:00pm
  • School holidays, vacations, and snow days are excluded.
• Previous experience with children a must; previous experience in a school setting, security role, current or former law enforcement desirable.
• Critical candidate traits include maturity, patience, courtesy, tact, flexibility, and communication skills both verbal and written.
• Ability to respond to or handle emergency situations effectively in cooperation with the in-charge person.
