Job Summary

Under supervision of up-line management, the Utility Worker in Training performs manual labor doing a variety of semi-skilled tasks relative to the operation of a water facility; and related work as required. This position will require a CDL and will be required to obtain a RI Distribution Level I Operator’s License within one year of hire or transfer to Transmission & Distribution.

SALARY REQUIREMENTS MET

$21.807/HOUR No CDL No Certification

Additional .50/HOUR CDL STIPEND w/CDL (must be obtained w/in 6 months)

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs semi-skilled and some skilled work required light and heavy manual labor.
  • Works with various crews, as assigned, laying out water pipes, gate valves, hydrants, blow offs, air relief valves, and service boxes.
  • Operates pneumatic, gasoline, and electric tools including, but not limited to, paving breakers, hammers, drills, saws, and compactors.
  • Operate CDL required vehicles as assigned.
  • Required to direct traffic during construction, as needed (if certified).
  • Required to keep simple records.
  • Adheres to all Providence Water safety procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Training Requirements

Upon Appointment:

  • Customer Service Training
  • Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity, and Diversity Training
  • Must obtain and maintain a Level I-Drinking Water Operator’s License within one (1) year of appointment. Must take the certification exam within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Must obtain a Class B, CDL, with air-brake endorsement within six (6) months.

Sustainment:

  • Participation in customer service training every 24 months.
  • Must maintain a valid State Driver’s License and a valid State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, with airbrake endorsement.
  • Must maintain a Level I-Drinking Water Operator’s Certification and maintain certification by attending continuing education (C.E.U.) programs.
  • Must be able to pass all requirements and conditions to be fitted to wear the appropriate job required respirator.
  • Failure to test for Level I-D Water Operator’s Certificate and/or failure to obtain a Class B CDL, with air-brake endorsement within the first 6 months of hire, transfer, or appointment will be cause for termination. Failure to obtain Level I-D Water Operator’s Certificate in one year from date of hire, transfer, or appointment will be cause for termination. In the event that an existing employee transfers to the division, failure to meet these requirements within the same time frames will be cause for reassignment to any other entry level vacancy should a position exist and at the corresponding hourly rate of that position.

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
