Job description

Program: Youth Truth Channel
Type: Project-based internship
Compensation: $17.15 hour for production work; training separately compensated
Time Commitment: Flexible, project-based schedule; hours vary by assignment
Internship Period: Sept. 2026 -Spring 2027
Format: Hybrid/In-person

The Youth Truth Channel (YTC) is an OWIES Youth Empowerment Program that combines a hands-on internship opportunity with a live, youth-led radio show on KXRW Community Radio. It gives young people ages 16-24 the opportunity to build professional skills in media and journalism while using radio as a platform to share their perspectives, explore issues affecting their communities, and engage in civic life.

Through professional training, mentorship, and hands-on production experience, interns will learn to develop stories, conduct interviews, report from the field, record and edit audio, and produce original radio content. Interns will then apply these skills by creating content for the Youth Truth Channel, currently focused on Youth Voices in Politics and the Youth Food Justice Alliance.

What You'll Do

During your internship, interns will:

  • Produce youth-led radio stories for KXRW, from story development and interviews through recording and editing.
  • Report from the field at selected events and community activities, gathering interviews, perspectives, and audio.
  • Document YFJA's journey through a documentary-style series highlighting youth experiences, community voices, and project development.
  • Create civic media for Youth Voices in Politics, covering events, civic education, voting, and youth advocacy.
  • Collaborate with youth and community partners to identify stories, gather content, and bring community experiences to the radio channel.
  • Build a portfolio of original work while gaining real-world experience in youth media, journalism, and production.

Before participating in Youth Truth Channel activities, interns will complete required in-person training at the KXRW Studio. Training will be led by experienced media professionals and followed by opportunities to apply those skills through YTC production.
