Animal Emergency & Specialty Center of Knoxville is growing—and we’re looking for an experienced Overnight Veterinary Assistant or Technician to join our exceptional Internal Medicine team. As a valued team member, you’ll play a key role in managing critical cases and expanding your technical skills.
As our Overnight Veterinary Assistant or Technician, you’ll be at the center of our overnight ICU and Internal Medicine services. You’ll provide hands-on care for critically ill patients, assist with complex diagnostics and treatments, and support our veterinarians through the night.
This role is ideal for someone who is technically skilled, thrives under pressure, and is looking to advance their career in a specialty emergency setting.
- Overnight shifts only
- Rotating weekdays and weekends
- Must be available for at least 2 weekends per month
- Includes holiday rotation based on hospital needs
???? Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Technical Skills
- Monitor and manage ICU patients overnight
- Perform advanced procedures: IV catheter placement, blood draws, radiographs, anesthesia monitoring
- Assist with internal medicine diagnostics (ultrasound, endoscopy, blood transfusions)
- Provide post-procedure and critical care monitoring
- Administer oral, injectable, IV, IM, and SQ medications
- Support emergency stabilization and triage procedures
Client Communication
- Update pet owners with patient status overnight
- Educate clients on treatment plans, home care, and next steps
Team Collaboration
- Partner with Internal Medicine and ER teams for continuity of care
- Participate in case rounds and share critical patient insights
Record Keeping
- Maintain detailed, accurate patient records and logs
- Document lab results, treatments, and patient progress
Facility Maintenance
- Keep ICU and treatment areas clean, organized, and fully stocked
What We’re Looking For:
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a veterinary hospital
- Strong technical skills in anesthesia, radiology, and emergency procedures
- Ability to manage and monitor critical care patients independently
- Excellent communication and client education skills
- Dependable, team-oriented, and comfortable working solo overnight
- Physically able to stand, walk, and lift for extended periods
Preferred Qualifications
- Veterinary Technician License (LVT, RVT, or CVT) preferred
- Previous experience in an ICU, emergency, or internal medicine setting is preferred; however, we are open to training strong assistants or technicians with a solid surgical background in general practice.
- Familiarity with advanced diagnostics like glucose curves, ACTH stim tests, or fluid therapy
