* EVS requires all TA candidates to complete a TA Leveling Test during the interview process. This test measures math skills, critical thinking, and medication administration for TA levels I, II & III.

Job Summary:
The Veterinary Technician Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing medical care to animals. They assist with daily operations in a veterinary clinic, ensuring the comfort and well-being of animals while assisting in medical procedures. Their tasks may include preparing examination rooms, handling animals, assisting with diagnostic tests, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and ensuring proper animal care during hospitalization. Veterinary Technician Assistants may also help with client communication, scheduling appointments, and maintaining accurate medical records. This role requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a passion for working with animals in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Education & Experience:
Required: High School graduate or equivalent.
Required: Minimum 1-year related experience in a Veterinary Clinic.
Preferred: Minimum 1-year related experience in an Emergency Veterinary Hospital.
Preferred: Technician Assistant Certification.
Preferred: Gas Sterilizer Certification.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Take and check patient medical records for past histories.
  2. Take and record patient vital signs.
  3. Restrain and assist the doctor(s) during exams, treatments, and procedures.
  4. Assist RVTs with technician's appointments and tasks.
  5. Appropriate animal husbandry.
  6. Obtain urine or fecal samples from patients.
  7. Regular departmental housekeeping duties and maintain cleanliness and readiness of scheduled department with tasks including sweeping, sanitizing, restocking, preparing kennels, laundry, etc.
  8. Maintain excellent inpatient care by administering regular walks, feedings, watering, and kennel cleaning.
  9. Administer medications to patients as needed (with appropriate oversight).
  10. Update basic information on Instinct treatment sheet(s).
  11. Understand patient pain assessment and scale.
  12. Set up fluid lines and troubleshoot fluid pumps.
  13. Complete and proper surgery suite set up and clean up.
  14. Understand and perform sterile techniques and surgical scrubbing.
  15. Knowledge of surgical instruments and monitoring equipment.
  16. Anticipate DVM and technician needs for various procedures.
  17. Administer SQ fluids and medications (with appropriate oversight).
  18. Working knowledge of what goes on the crash cart(s).
  19. Ability to take directions from technicians and DVMs during CPR.
  20. Basic understanding of radiographs.
  21. Knowledge of how to differentiate between bone, soft tissue, and air.
  22. Knowledge positioning for basic radiographs.
  23. Ability to place cephalic IV catheters (with appropriate oversight).
  24. Ability to draw blood from cephalic, jugular, and lateral saphenous veins (with appropriate oversight).
  25. Ability to accurately take blood pressure and SpO2 readings.
  26. Basic understanding of ECG machines.
  27. Administration of IM, SQ, IV, and PO medications (with appropriate oversight).
  28. Basic medical math.
  29. Assist Inventory Supervisor maintain all laboratory equipment.
  30. Performs PCV/TS, parvo, FeLV/FIV, urine tests.
  31. Brings accurate, concise, and relevant information to the DVM.
  32. Set up rebreathing and non-rebreathing anesthesia machines as needed.
  33. Troubleshoot pressure checks when they fail.
  34. Appropriately clean and prep all surgical instruments and wrap surgical packs.
  35. Some familiarity with autoclaves.
  36. Other duties as assigned; this list is not exhaustive, & employer reserves the right to assign additional tasks & responsibilities as needed.

Schedule:
A full-time EVS employee averages at least 36 hours per work week. Hours typically vary and include holidays, weekends, swing shifts, overnights, and on-call as necessary to fill the needs of the hospital.
