Alternatives-For-Girls in Detroit is seeking a Resident Advisor for a full-time, midnight shift role. You will support residents transitioning to independence, supervise shelter routines, and provide life skills training.

The position requires strong judgment, reliability, and the ability to work evenings and weekends. The role involves intake processing, mentoring, transportation assistance, and coordinating with caseworkers.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma required; coursework in social work or human services preferred.
  • 6 months to 1 year of experience working with adolescents or young adults.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Must possess a current driver's license, good driving record, and reliable transportation.
  • Requires basic computer software and data entry skills.
  • May be trained to perform some of the key responsibilities listed above.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome new residents to the shelter and conduct intakes and orientation.
  • Provide hands-on independent life skills training (e.g., cooking, cleaning, chores, grocery shopping, hygiene).
  • Meet weekly with caseworkers to discuss issues and progress, and develop objectives.
  • Mentor residents, provide support, review progress, and arrange outings.
  • Assist clients with transportation needs and appointments.
  • Respond to medical needs, distribute medications, and facilitate access to care.
  • Grocery shop, stock food, prepare meals and snacks, encourage healthy living.
  • Conduct house meetings, activities and educational forums as assigned.
  • Facilitate group activities and problem-solving among clients.
  • Encourage parenting skills and provide community resources.
  • Update logs and complete intake/discharge paperwork.
