A Day in the Life of a Resident Advocate

Each day as a Resident Advocate is dynamic, hands-on, and full of meaningful interactions. You might start your shift preparing rooms for new arrivals, checking in with clients about their day, or collaborating with case managers to ensure needs are being met. Throughout your day, you’ll handle everything from intakes and safety checks to supporting clients with daily routines and transporting them to appointments. You’ll also monitor the shelter environment, manage essential supplies, and help keep the space clean and welcoming. It’s a role that keeps you engaged, on your feet, and deeply connected to the people you’re there to serve.

This is an overnight position, 11pm-7am Sunday-Thursday

As a Resident Advocate, you're often the first face our clients see when they walk through the door—and sometimes, it's the first time in a long time they feel safe. You play a vital role in creating a supportive, stable environment where survivors of domestic violence can begin to heal. Whether it’s offering comfort during a crisis, ensuring the shelter is safe and clean, or simply being a consistent, caring presence, the work you do helps individuals and families feel seen, respected, and empowered. Your compassion, attention, and advocacy directly impact their ability to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

Here’s What You’ll Get to Do

  • Welcome new clients into the shelter by giving facility tours, completing intake paperwork, explaining policies, and providing needed personal supplies.
  • Offer residential clients consistent emotional support and crisis intervention using trauma-informed, nonjudgmental communication demonstrating sensitivity and supports to those in crisis.
  • Monitor the facility—including security cameras—to ensure safety and quickly respond to any issues or emergencies.
  • Collaborate with case managers to stay informed about client needs and provide updates via documentation, email, and/or verbal communication.
  • Assist clients with daily life skills like healthy routines, organization, clean living skills and time management.
  • Monitor the resident advocate desk and help meet residents’ basic needs by distributing medication, toiletries, linens, and other essentials.
  • Monitors the facility for safety and cleanliness. Pitch in with light cleaning tasks like spot cleaning common areas and rooms and laundering shelter bedding.
  • Provide transportation for residents in agency vehicles to and from appointments, meetings, or hospital as needed.
  • Perform basic administrative tasks, including filing, incident reports summaries and managing intake and exit paperwork, and other duties, not listed here, deemed necessary for the well-being of the agency.
  • Keep system data and Client First data up to date, accurate, and inputting in a timely manner for reporting and tracking.
  • Monitor and support volunteers, interns, and guides during your shift, as needed.
  • Intervene in crisis situations, using approved methods to promote the safety of all residents.
  • Communicate with supervisor and designated staff regarding pertinent client issues.
  • Monitor supplies such as bedding, towels, pillows, etc.; prepares rooms for new clients.
  • Assist with special events and activities during scheduled shift.
  • Provides backup coverage to hotline phone calls assesses the level of client risk and as well as providing mental and emotional state of mind by active listening, comforting words, and positive problem-solving.
Qualifications

Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in psychology, social work, sociology or similar with 6 months of experience working in a residential facility, shelter, or similar environment

OR an Associate’s Degree and any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid Texas Driver’s License and clear driving record

Knowledge and Skills and Abilities:
•Knowledge of domestic violence and client trauma.
•Skilled in Microsoft Office applications.
•Skilled in verbal de-escalation and crisis management.
•Ability to maintain a clear and valid Texas driver’s license.
•Ability to communicate in both written and verbal formats to meet position responsibilities.
•Ability to be sensitive to the language, economic and cultural needs of clients.
•Ability to safely drive a company vehicle to off–site locations and attend off-site meetings and events.
•Maintains professional boundaries with clients at all times.
•Protects client confidentiality.
•Ability to work overtime when necessary to cover shifts

Mental and Physical Abilities: Duties are usually performed seated with occasional periods of standing or walking. Limited physical effort is required associated with lifting and carrying objects (less than 25 lbs).

Working Conditions: Work may be performed in an office environment but is not limited to an office environment. Ability to work some weekends, evenings, and overnight hours.
