Overhead Crane Operator/Material Handler (1st or 2nd shift)

Position Description

This individual will ensure a smooth flow of material through the facility using an overhead crane, forklift, and other equipment/tools. They will handle all aspects of shipping, receiving, and storage of metal sheets, plates, and coils. There may also be opportunities to operate Coil Processing/Cut-to-Length equipment, CNC Plasma/Oxy-Fuel equipment, CNC Machining Centers, and other machinery, with training provided if needed.

Essential Responsibilities / Functions

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Use overhead cranes and forklifts to unload, store, and stage raw materials, verifying correctness according to orders and following SSAB’s ISO 9001 procedures.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks or railcars, verifying accuracy against customer BOLs or orders.
  • Secure materials loaded on railcars.
  • Perform daily inspections of lifting and processing equipment as needed.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Operate Coil Processing/Cut-to-Length equipment.
  • Operate CNC Oxy-Fuel/Plasma cutting equipment.
  • Operate Oxy-Fuel Track Torch equipment.
  • Operate CNC Machining Centers.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist with maintenance tasks on a volunteer basis.
Qualifications – Education and Experience
Experience and Competencies Desired:
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes.
Education Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The employee will frequently need to:

  • Sit, stand, walk, and alternate positions for up to 8 hours.
  • Use both hands to grasp, handle, and feel textures and temperatures.
  • Lift and/or move up to 35 lbs.

Occasionally, the employee will need to:

  • Balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb.
  • Bend, twist, reach above/below shoulder level.
  • Push, pull, lift, and carry items weighing less than 50 lbs.

Vision and hearing capabilities required include:

  • Near, mid, and far vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Talking and hearing in various settings.

Tools and equipment used include:

  • Desktop computers, hand tools, overhead cranes, oxy-fuel hand torch.

Work conditions involve:

  • Being around moving equipment and trucks.
  • Wearing personal protective equipment.

Position details:

  • Full-time, non-exempt, eligible for overtime.
