Position Summary

Assist in the supervision and coordination of activities of workers engaged in the installation of propulsion machinery, sea valves, steering gear, anchor handling equipment, pumps, ventilating equipment, and related components. Work with other crafts as instructed by supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Comply with company, federal, state, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations, and policies while performing duties.
  • Provide technical assistance and oversee the workforce in the Millwright Machinist Department.
  • Operate metalworking machine tools such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, or grinder to machine parts to specifications.
  • Assist in inspecting propulsion machinery, sea valves, steering gear, anchor handling equipment, pumps, and ventilating equipment installations for compliance with specifications.
  • Coordinate work schedules and prioritize work in consultation with the Department Superintendent or Foreman.
  • Monitor work performance and productivity; assist in meeting production goals.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools and maintain industrial machines and equipment.
  • Flag cranes, figure weights, and rig lifts as required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Work with minimal supervision and perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May indirectly supervise and/or train subordinates.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalence plus three or more years of Millwright Machinist experience in a shipyard (desired). Prior supervisory experience desired.
  • A strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of marine propulsion systems.
  • Required to pass Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) tack welding test to become American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certified.
  • Knowledge of ship terminology, safety rules, and OSHA and ABS standards desirable.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written, verbal, or diagrammatic plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and employees.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
  • Basic arithmetic skills; able to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to read a tape measure and use a cutting torch.
  • Integrity, ethics, flexibility, initiative, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, safety consciousness, and multitasking.
Physical Demands

Regularly required to communicate; frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required PPE, work above ground at heights of at least 50 feet, work from scaffolding or man‑lifts, and work in confined spaces and withstanding extreme heat and cold in an outdoor climate.

Work Environment

Employees may be exposed to electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, continuous loud noise, and other hazards found in a heavy industrial shipyard environment. Rigorous compliance with safety procedures, policies, and personal safety equipment requirements is mandatory.
