Position Summary
Repair, modify, or overhaul various types of equipment or systems. Set up and operate portable machining tools or equipment. This role involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping or bending, and working in overhead structures, confined spaces, or beneath machinery. Strict adherence to safety and quality standards, good housekeeping, high critical thinking and reading comprehension, and willingness to travel/overtime are required.
Duties And Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL
• Perform work independently as an Outside Machinist, with experience in trade qualifications, and mentor junior craftsmen.
• Understand and perform setup, alignment, and operation of portable and hand tools, and accurately use precision measuring instruments such as height gauges, calipers, verniers, lay-out tools, tachometers, thermometers, vibration indicators, and document readings and measurements.
• Interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications; disassemble, repair, install, test, and inspect ship machinery including propulsion systems, pumps, valves, launchers, discharge machinery, ventilation equipment, steering gear, evaporators, heaters, condensers, torpedo tubes, shutter doors, and antenna mast mechanical groups.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
REQUIRED
• High School/GED with Apprenticeship Diploma and vocational courses or technical school; or military/civilian experience with marine mechanical systems.
• Ability to obtain government base access.
• Knowledge and practical skills testing required.
• Certifications: NAVSEA Hatch Inspector, Electroplating, Deep Submergence Systems (SOC MCD A, B, C), SUBSAFE Qualification.
• Ability to obtain a Secret/Confidential security clearance.

OCCASIONAL activities include lifting 20-50 lbs, working in confined spaces, kneeling, jumping, running, crawling, and repetitive arm/hand movements.
FREQUENT activities include lifting 10-25 lbs, climbing stairs/ladders, standing, balancing, stooping, squatting, reaching, overhead work, and operating vehicles.
CONSTANT activities include lifting up to 10 lbs and wearing PPE for body, vision, and hearing protection.
