Job description

Hours per week: Part‑time, 10 hours per week; 2‑3 days per week; Monday – Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours

The Bilingual Outreach Apprentice will contribute to WMG’s outreach efforts and effective volunteer management by working with a variety of staff, docents, and other volunteers. In addition to helping to facilitate the docent and volunteer programs, the apprentice will engage with the community both at on‑site and outreach events. Along with fellow staff, docents, other volunteers, and partners, the apprentice will be actively involved in communicating with the public about our mission, vision, and programming.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized; passionate about WMG’s efforts to engage a diverse community in the Santa Cruz watershed; and able to communicate with diverse members of the community. They will be comfortable speaking in both English and Spanish and enjoy communicating with people of all ages and backgrounds.

A key goal of WMG’s outreach efforts is to engage limited‑income, BIPOC, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities, and we seek an apprentice who is part of and/or able to effectively engage with these populations.

The Apprentice will participate in weekly onboarding and development activities with a cohort of other apprentices, interns, and docents. Training often occurs on Friday afternoons, 3‑5 pm.

Job Requirements

• Interest in and support of WMG’s mission and vision
• Advanced proficiency in conversational Spanish: able to speak comfortably in both English and Spanish
• 1+ years of experience in education, public speaking, coaching, program coordination, project management, office management, or team management
• Ability to work well in a team setting and collaborate with other team members to accomplish projects together
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to diverse audiences in both speech and writing
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Familiarity with creating, uploading, and sharing documents and photos via Google Drive
• Cell phone that can be used to make and receive work calls
• Ability to perform light to moderate physical work in outdoor settings
• Ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed

Routine Duties & Responsibilities

• Coordinate docent and volunteer engagement in Living Lab and outreach activities
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with docents and other volunteers through in‑person meetings as well as email communications
  • Direct prospective volunteers to opportunities that suit their interests, skills, and availability
  • Alongside volunteers, docents, and staff, help plan and facilitate Living Lab and outreach events
  • Help maintain an up‑to‑date time tracking calendar of events that includes information regarding volunteers who will participate; needs for specific events; time, location, and other key details
  • Communicate regularly with docents and other volunteers regarding Living Lab tours, outreach events, and other activities
• Co‑organize, assist with, and attend outreach and educational events
  • Collaborate with the Education & Outreach Manager to develop an outreach plan for Spring 2027, with a focus on engaging limited‑income, BIPOC, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities; research and make contact with potential partners in these communities
  • Communicate and develop positive working relationships with community organizations, schools, and other partners that request WMG’s participation in outreach events
  • Utilize the WMG website and social media to reach new audiences
  • Conduct outreach through in‑person events, distributing flyers, phone calls, emails, print media, social media, and website promotion
  • Assist with hands‑on educational workshops at the Living Lab

Preferred Experience

• Advanced writing skills in both English and Spanish
• Experience with coordinating teams of volunteers or staff
