Purpose and Scope

The professional registered nurse Outpatient RN CAP 1 is an entry-level position within the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This role involves providing and coordinating clinically competent care, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients. The RN may delegate tasks to direct care staff such as RNs, LVNs/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As part of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this position engages in decision-making, teaching, leadership, and quality improvement activities to enhance patient outcomes and facility operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform duties according to Fresenius Kidney Care policies, procedures, standards of nursing practice, and regulations.
• Under supervision, perform patient assessments, data collection, and documentation, adjusting treatment plans as needed.
• Provide patient and family education regarding care and treatment options.
• Deliver safe and effective hemodialysis therapy in collaboration with care staff.
• Administer medications as prescribed, documenting appropriately.
• Assist with emergency response measures.
• Participate in staff training, orientation, and serve as a resource for the healthcare team.
• Ensure proper laboratory procedures are followed and reschedule missed collections.
• Update nursing assessments and care plans collaboratively.
• Discuss transplant and treatment modality options with patients.
• Complete CAP requirements for advancement.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Involves heavy lifting, patient mobility assistance, and prolonged standing.
• May require moving equipment up to 200 lbs. and lifting solutions up to 30 lbs.
• Work environment includes typical healthcare facility conditions, with exposure to infectious materials.
• Includes desk work, computer use, and interactions with staff and patients.
• May require travel to training or other facilities.

Supervision

Supervised oversight of care staff after meeting specific training and experience requirements, including minimum RN experience and hemodialysis experience.

Education and Licensure

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
• Current state licensure.
• CPR/BLS certification.
• Practicing in accordance with state requirements.

Experience and Skills

• Entry level for RNs with <2 years nephrology nursing experience.
• Preferred: Hemodialysis experience.
