Overview

Under the supervision of the Lab Blood Draw Station Supervisor within Laboratory Medicine, performs phlebotomy for patients at draw station locations. Also performs office duties to support operations and interacts positively with patients and clients.

Responsibilities
  1. Ensure all necessary information is obtained from physicians and providers for reimbursement purposes.
  2. Review insurance details with patients and record in EMR.
  3. Create MR numbers and complete registration for new patients using hospital standards.
  4. Update patient records and manage laboratory components as needed.
  5. Produce ABNs, provide financial consultation, obtain signatures, and scan forms.
  6. Communicate blood draw instructions clearly to patients.
  7. Document notes and comments on orders regarding issue resolution.
  8. Verify receipt of all authorizations before specimen collection.
  9. Inform patients of billing responsibilities and hospital policies.
  10. Coordinate with supervisors on testing authorizations and approvals.
  11. Adhere to HIPAA, JCAHO, and federal regulations.
  12. Verify test orders and answer patient inquiries about collection.
  13. Gather and transcribe test requisitions accurately.
  14. Review and confirm test orders before collection.
  15. Coordinate specimen collection timing with stability requirements.
  16. Maintain proper documentation and manage test order paperwork.
  17. Manage preadmission testing, ensuring tests are within proper timeframes.
  18. Ensure collection of tests prior to surgeries and coordinate with physicians and patients.
  19. Collect samples and perform EKGs safely and efficiently.
  20. Maintain annual competency updates and follow specimen handling guidelines.
  21. Verify patient identity and label specimens accurately.
  22. Attend ongoing education and maintain proficiency in collection techniques.
  23. Properly collect and handle specimens, understanding the order of draw.
  24. Perform venipuncture using aseptic techniques and explain collection procedures to patients.
  25. Follow universal precautions and maintain a clean environment.
  26. Recognize adverse reactions and follow protocols to ensure patient safety.
  27. Process and package specimens appropriately for transport.
  28. Maintain equipment, document temperatures, and troubleshoot issues.
  29. Ensure specimen integrity from collection to courier pickup.
  30. Manage inventory, supplies, and support regulatory inspections.
  31. Participate in regulatory audits and inspections, answering questions accurately.
  32. Review lab orders and patient information for inconsistencies.
  33. Maintain supply inventory, order supplies, and discard expired items.
  34. Utilize computer systems like Epic for task management and specimen collection.
  35. Maintain knowledge of systems, reconcile discrepancies, and operate downtime procedures.
  36. Provide service excellence and ensure positive patient experiences.
  37. Coordinate patient flow, communicate delays, and follow telephone etiquette.
  38. Recognize service issues and initiate recovery processes.
  39. Follow dress code and professional communication standards.
  40. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required; completion of an approved phlebotomy certification or equivalent experience.

Experience: Minimum six months of current phlebotomy experience or completion of an accredited program with internship; 2-3 years in customer service, preferably in healthcare.

Licensure: Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent.

Skills: Self-directed, organized, team-oriented, capable of multitasking, with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Basic understanding of phlebotomy, medical terminology, and proficiency in computer systems like Epic. Ability to train others and communicate complex information effectively.

Additional Information

Willingness to travel between Blood Draw Station locations, primarily Old Saybrook.
