Job summary

Penn Medicine in Lancaster, PA seeks a Certified Pharmacy Technician to assist pharmacists with dispensing, labeling, and patient interactions in a fast-paced hospital setting. You will support daily operations, verify prescriptions, answer inquiries, and help maintain patient safety and service standards.

Under supervision, you will prepare medications, manage inventory, process prescriptions, and maintain accurate records, while ensuring regulatory compliance and optimal pharmaceutical care

Qualifications

• Certified Pharmacy Technician - PTCB required.
• HS Diploma/GED required.
• ASHP-accredited training preferred; 2+ years pharmacy experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.

Responsibilities

• Prepares medications for dispensing under supervision of the pharmacist.
• Prepackages bulk medications and prepares oral solutions, ointments, and creams.
• Assists patients dropping off/picking up prescriptions and verifies correct prescriptions at point of sale.
• Sorts, credits and restocks medications as appropriate.
• Prepares pharmacy inventory and completes drug orders from storeroom.
• Maintains pharmacy records and regulatory compliance.
• Answers telephone and triages inquiries.
• Ensures shift tasks are completed and dispensing area stays clean and organized.
• Retrieves and interprets prescriptions and performs pharmaceutical calculations.
• Enters patient and insurance information into the information system for pharmacist review.
• Communicates with insurance for prescription claims and payroll/benefits processing.
• Demonstrates compliance with controlled substances handling procedures.
• Assists in maintaining inventory and supplier paperwork.

Summary

• Under the direction and supervision of a registered pharmacist, the pharmacy technician performs various functions associated with the dispensing, charging and delivery of medication to patient care areas, in compliance with department policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care.

Responsibilities

• Prepares medications for dispensing under the supervision of the pharmacist, demonstrating accuracy, precision, and consistency relating to selection, packaging, and labeling functions.


• Prepares and prepackages bulk medications


• Compounds oral solutions, ointments and creams under supervision of the pharmacist.


• Assists patients who are dropping off and/or picking up prescription orders. At point of sale, verifies that customer receives the correct prescription(s).


• Sorts, credits and re-stocks medications as appropriate when they are not dispensed to patients.


• Prepares the pharmacy inventory


• Completes orders for drugs and supplies from the storeroom and/or distributor, receive drugs and stock shelves and verify all associated paperwork.


• Assists in the creation, handling, processing and maintenance of a variety of pharmacy records, to promote efficient operation of the pharmacy and regulatory compliance.


• Answers telephone using appropriate etiquette, screens and triages telephone/counter inquiries.


• Assures work for each shift is completed prior to departure.


• Maintains dispensing area in a neat, orderly, and clean condition as observed by the pharmacist.


• Retrieve and interpret prescriptions


• Perform pharmaceutical calculations, taking into account patient and drug characteristics


• Enter prescriptions, patient health information and insurance information into the clinical pharmacy information system for pharmacist review.


• Communicates with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims. Facilitates employee payroll deduction and/or medical billing for payment capture when appropriate.


• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of and compliance with procedures for handling controlled substances and specialty pharmaceuticals.


• Reviews and transmits wholesaler orders as required.


• Serve as a training resource for new technicians and assist in evaluating their progress as directed.


• Assists in maintaining proper inventory and control of drugs and supplies purchased by the pharmacy.

• Certified Pharmacy Technician - PTCB (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience

• H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

Equivalent Experience

• Education Specialization: Completion of ASHP accredited (or comparable) pharmacy technician training program preferred. Equivalent Experience: 2+ years previous pharmacy experience.
