Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA is seeking a Pharmacy Technician for a day shift in a busy hospital setting. Qualifications

  • Employee must remain in good standing with the MA Board of Registration in Pharmacy including maintenance of registration and fees.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required.
  • Experience with computer systems and MS Office applications.

  • Restocks automated dispensing machines (ADSs) and floor stock medications.
  • Delivers all medication in compliance with DEA, DPH & State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • Prepares and delivers IV medications per USP 797/800 standards and maintains related records.
  • Compounds non-sterile products and repackages medications per USP 795/800.
  • Checks for expired medications and disposes of them per regulatory guidelines.
  • Participates in training and mentorship of students and technicians.
  • Prepares specialized sterile/non-sterile products including TPNs, neonatal, hazardous, and study meds per USP standards.
  • Suggests workflow efficiencies and assists with new practices.
  • Maintain staffing in two or more areas of the pharmacy.

This position is located in Longwood in our Shapiro building outpatient infusion center. We produce hazardous and non-hazardous medication for administration at this location. Tier 1 medical center pay. This is a day only position with no weekends and no holidays.

Delivers medications, including controlled substances, to nursing areas and ancillary departments in accordance with established policies and procedures, and DEA and DPH regulations.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Restocks automated dispensing machines (ADSs) and floor stock medications. Follows relevant Epic workflows including but not limited to loading medications, dispensing doses, dispense tracking, and fulfilling cart fill items.
  2. Delivers all medication in compliance with all DEA, DPH & State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  3. Prepares and delivers IV medications in accordance with Federal USP 797 & USP 800 standards. Maintains records pertaining to IV admixtures, maintains cleanliness in sterile areas, and completes relevant Quality Assurance processes.
  4. Compounds non-sterile products and repackages bulk supplies of medications in unit of use packaging in accordance with all Federal USP 795 & USP 800 standards.
  5. Checks for expired medications within the pharmacy & automated dispensing cabinets. Ensures that all expired/damaged medications are disposed of in accordance with RCRA, OSHA & NIOSH regulations.
  6. Participates in the continued training of and provides mentorship to students and pharmacy technicians.
  7. Prepares specialized sterile and/or non-sterile products including TPNs, neonatal, hazardous, and chemotherapeutic & study medications in accordance with Federal USP 797, USP 795, and USP 800 standards.
  8. Suggests workflow efficiencies and works with the Technician III staff and Lead technicians to help implement new practices.
  9. Maintain staffing in two or more areas of the pharmacy.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED required.
  2. Pharmacy Technician (Massachusetts) – Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Technician – Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or Certificate 2 EXCPT.
  3. Employee must remain in good standing with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy including maintenance of registration and fees.
  4. 1-3 years related work experience required.
  5. Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. 3-6 months experience as a hospital pharmacy technician.
  2. Ability to perform simple and complex pharmaceutical calculations.
  3. Familiarity with medications: generic and trade names, methods of administration, and conversion between metric and apothecary systems

Pay Range: $27.00 – $36.34 The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
