Job summary

Position Summary

VHC Health is seeking a highly motivated and patient-focused Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our Neurosurgery team. This is a fully outpatient position providing comprehensive clinical management for patients with disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system. Working closely with board-certified neurosurgeons, the APP serves as an integral member of the care team, supporting patients throughout their surgical and non-surgical treatment journey.

The APP will provide pre-operative evaluations, post-operative follow-up care, neurological assessments, patient education, and treatment coordination while ensuring exceptional patient outcomes and continuity of care. This position offers the opportunity to develop expertise in neurosurgical care within a collaborative, high-performing clinical environment.

This is a Monday through Friday outpatient position with no operating room responsibilities, hospital rounding, call requirements, or invasive procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Patient Care
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical histories, neurological examinations, and review of diagnostic findings.
  • Perform pre-operative evaluations to assess surgical readiness and identify potential risk factors.
  • Provide post-operative follow-up care for patients recovering from spine and cranial neurosurgical procedures.
  • Monitor patient progress and communicate findings to supervising neurosurgeons.
  • Assess and manage patients with conditions such as degenerative spine disease, spinal stenosis, disc herniation, radiculopathy, peripheral nerve disorders, and other neurosurgical conditions.
  • Review and interpret diagnostic imaging, laboratory studies, and test results.
  • Prescribe medications and manage medication therapies in accordance with state regulations and scope of practice.
Post-Surgical Management
  • Evaluate and monitor surgical incision sites for healing and signs of infection or complications.
  • Perform wound care management.
  • Remove sutures and staples as indicated.
  • Identify post-operative concerns and elevate complex clinical issues when appropriate.
  • Reinforce post-operative instructions and recovery expectations.
  • Monitor patients for complications and coordinate timely interventions as needed.
Patient Education and Care Coordination
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment recommendations, medications, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations.
  • Coordinate referrals to physical therapy, pain management, neurology, primary care, imaging services, and other specialty providers.
  • Facilitate communication among patients, physicians, specialists, and ancillary services.
  • Promote patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for patients throughout their continuum of care.
Documentation and Quality
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, clinical standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
  • Support clinic workflow efficiency and patient access initiatives.
  • Contribute to departmental goals focused on quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and operational excellence.

Compensation Range:

  • Nurse Practitioner: $123,260.80 – $234,145.60 annually
  • Physician Assistant: $110,406.40 – $209,768.00 annually

Education
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program required.
  • Master's degree or higher required.
Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant required.
  • Experience in neurosurgery, orthopedics, spine surgery, neurology, surgical specialties, or outpatient specialty practice strongly preferred.
Certification and Licensure
  • Current Virginia licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant required.
  • Current national certification as a Nurse Practitioner (ANCC, AANP, or equivalent) or Physician Assistant (NCCPA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
