Job Title: Outpatient Medical Coder 2

Department: Health System Shared Services | Revenue Management

This role involves coding outpatient medical records to facilitate reimbursement and data collection for OSU Wexner Medical Center and The James Cancer Hospital. ICD-10-CM codes are assigned for diagnoses of all outpatients treated within the OSU Health System. Diagnoses and CPT-4 procedure codes are applied to outpatient records not captured through the charge description master. Medical record data is reviewed for accuracy in EPIC/IHIS before completing the chart. The position involves coding for emergency room, outpatient surgery, outpatient clinics, observation, and other ancillary areas.

Position Summary

The primary responsibility is coding medical records and documents at the conclusion of the patient’s visit, including selecting appropriate diagnoses and procedures, and ensuring codes flow correctly to the billing system. The role requires complete and accurate coding for reimbursement, research, and planning, adhering to departmental productivity and quality standards, and maintaining an approved work schedule.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED. Certification or vocational training may be preferred.
  • Credentialing as a Registered Health Information Technician, Registered Health Information Administrator, Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA), or Certified Outpatient Coder (AAPC) if managing hospital coding; ROCC if coding Radiation Oncology; RHIA, CCS, COC, or CPC by AAPC if managing professional coding.
  • 1 year of relevant experience required; 2-4 years preferred.
