Job Summary

Using established coding principles and procedures, reviews, analyzes, and codes diagnostic and/or procedural information from the patient's medical record for reimbursement and billing purposes. Accurately abstracts information from the medical record to compile a patient database that supports medical research, patient care evaluation, and administrative decision-making. Ensures compliance with coding guidelines, reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation standards.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. required; additional specialty coding certification or ten (10) years of coding experience preferred.
• One to two (1-2) years of college or coursework in related fields preferred. Must have thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems.
• Minimum of two (2) years coding experience required; specialty coding experience preferred.

Certifications

• Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), CPC, or CCS required.
