Job summary

AdventHealth in Altamonte Springs, Florida, seeks an experienced medical coder to join our team. You will assign ICD-10-CM and CPT codes across ER and outpatient settings, maintain high accuracy, and support timely claims processing within Epic/CAC environments.

Requires RHIA/RHIT/CCS or CPC credentials, 3+ years in ER/outpatient coding, and strong communication skills. Competitive pay and comprehensive benefits are offered in a faith-based health system.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a medical coding certificate program or a two-year HIM program.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in emergency room and ancillary coding.
• Must pass an outpatient coding assessment.
• Two plus years of ambulatory surgery and observation coding.
• RHIA or RHIT or CCS or CPC or CPC-P certification required.

Responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10-CM and CPT codes on chart in accordance with all UHDDS rules, ICD-10 Coding Conventions, CPT Assistant and approved coding policies and procedures.
• Maintains 96% or higher accuracy rate and meets productivity benchmarks.
• Adheres to coding guidelines and regulatory standards; communicates issues to Coding Management Team.
• Collaborates with Coding team to ensure coding is completed within two days of patient discharge.
• Monitors discharged not final billed account holds and releases timely.

Job Description:

Assign ICD-10-CM and CPT codes on chart in accordance with all UHDDS rules, ICD-10 Coding Conventions, CPT Assistant and approved coding policies and procedures. Maintains 96% or higher accuracy rate. Consistently meets or exceeds established productivity benchmarks. Adheres to departmental coding policies, official coding guidelines, Coding Clinic recommendations, and all applicable government regulations. Effectively manages time and workload to meet both productivity and accuracy standards. Accurately and efficiently completes coding assignments across multiple facilities within established timeframes. Collaborates with Coding team members to ensure coding is completed within two days of patient discharge. Communicate with various departments to request the addition, removal, or modification of charges, and to clarify discharge dispositions or patient type/status as needed. Communicates coding-related issues that may affect claims processing, coding accuracy, or compliance to the Coding Management Team. Other duties as assigned. Assumes ownership of the discharged not final billed account holds by monitoring the queue holds and ensuring accounts are released in a timely manner.

Education and Experience Required:

1) High school diploma or equivalent, and successful completion of a medical coding certificate program or a two-year Health Information Management (HIM) program.

2) Minimum of 3 years of experience in emergency room and ancillary coding. 3) Must pass an outpatient coding assessment.

Experience Preferred:

Two plus years of ambulatory surgery and observation coding.

Licensure, Certification or Registration:

RHIA or RHIT or CCS or CPC or CPC-P. One certification is required.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

Foundational knowledge of medical coding principles and practices. Familiarity with official coding guidelines, including Coding Clinic guidance and regulatory standards. Proficient computer skills with the ability to learn and navigate Epic and Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) systems effectively. Comfortable working with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint Ability to accurately review and interpret clinical documentation within the medical record and apply appropriate codes using coding software.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Basic Coding knowledge [Required]
• Knowledge of specific coding guidelines, and Coding Clinic guidelines [Required]
• Must be able to score a minimum of 75% on coding test, given during interview process [Required]
• Good computer skills with the ability to learn Cerner, Epic, and 3M Encoder [Required]
• Comfortable with all Microsoft Office programs [Required]
• Ability to review documentation in a medical record and to enter into the coding software [Required]
• Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills [Required]
• Registered as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or high school graduate with certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) [Required]

Education:

• High School Grad or Equiv [Required]

Work Experience:

• 1+ year outpatient coding experience preferred for an emergency room and other outpatient coding [Preferred]

Licenses and Certifications:
