Job Description
Must reside in IL, IN, IA, or WI.
The Outpatient Coder II reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and accreditation standards. Follows ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, interprets ICD-10-CM coding conventions and instructional notes to select appropriate diagnoses with a minimum of 95% accuracy. Meets established minimum coding productivity per departmental protocol and guidelines.
The Outpatient Coder II is an expert in ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, HCPCS, CPT codes, and modifiers, focusing on complex outpatient encounters such as Observation stays, Same Day Surgery, Surgery Center, and Outpatient in a bed. Requires in-depth knowledge of disease processes, anatomy & physiology, and pharmacology for accurate coding and reimbursement. Also, possesses expanded knowledge of HCPCS, Level I & II Chargemaster, CPT soft codes, and facility modifiers to resolve NCCI Edits. The role builds on the expertise of Coder Associate and Coder I.

Responsibilities:

  1. Utilizes technical coding expertise to assign appropriate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes to outpatient visits, reviewing medical records thoroughly and utilizing all documentation.
  2. Interprets health record documentation using knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and medical terminology to report diagnoses and procedures accurately.
  3. Sends physician queries when documentation clarification is needed, follows Coding Clinic guidelines for HCPCS and CPT, and interprets coding conventions to ensure accuracy with at least 95% precision.
  4. Focuses on anatomy across the entire body system.
  5. Provides technical expertise to analyze system changes, participates in testing software modifications, and identifies opportunities to enhance computer-assisted coding (CAC) systems.
  6. Resolves NCCI Edits with approved hospital modifiers.
  7. Utilizes 3M Encoder resources to ensure optimal coding accuracy.
  8. Articulates rationale for coding choices, especially when prompted by data quality audits.
  9. Meets minimum coding productivity (90%) and quality standards (95%) for outpatient encounters.

Qualifications:

  • Credentialed by AHIMA (RHIT, RHIA, or CCS) with ongoing CE requirements (20-30 CE hours every two years).
  • 3-4 years of coding experience in an acute healthcare setting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 4+ years of coding experience in an acute healthcare setting.
