Position Purpose

The OSP Fiber Construction Worker position is your first step to a rewarding career in the construction and maintenance of our nation’s Power Grid. An equipment operator’s primary responsibility is performing support tasks for fiber cable construction, repair, or maintenance.

Responsibilities/Duties
  • Securing the safety of yourself and others
  • Assisting fellow line-workers in meeting project objectives
  • Joining storm restoration efforts when needed
  • Operating vehicles and equipment professionally
  • Continuing training to improve technical and leadership skills
Tasks
  • Performing fiber cable construction, maintenance, or repair work safely
  • Operating a mini excavator efficiently
  • Inspecting rubber goods and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Knowing when to wear PPE
  • Maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools
  • Performing rigorous physical labor
  • Using hand tools properly and maintaining them
  • Understanding equipment setup and grounding basics
  • Working at heights and in confined spaces
  • Understanding excavation and shoring requirements
  • Following directions accurately
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Performing related work as required
Physical Aspects
  • Must meet physical demands typical of powerline construction roles
  • Regularly required to talk, listen, stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Frequently lift/move up to 50 lbs or more
  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment
Work Environment

Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and extreme weather conditions. Noise levels may be loud. Work is outdoors and subject to weather variations.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record
  • Minimum 6 months experience operating a mini excavator

  • Ability to travel long distances and work in various locations
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs
  • Willing to work overtime as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • CDL Permit or ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days
