Job Summary:

The Orthopedic Technician is responsible for ensuring that patients receive care according to physician/provider guidelines. The Orthopedic Technician will apply and adjust plaster casts and orthopedic equipment and devices, inspect bandages, devices, and equipment, apply special devices as needed, render patient care and assist physicians/providers in any area required.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs a variety of orthopedic related activities including but not limited to: applying and removing dressings, removing sutures/staples, applying and removing casts and splints.

  • Assists physician in back-office duties including rooming patients, taking vital signs and patient history, and assisting with minor procedures.

  • Performs basic triage per specific office protocol procedures. Recognizes and responds appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocols.

  • Coordinates patient flow and reviews/prepares paperwork for scheduled office clinic time. Serves as a direct liaison with operative staff and scheduling office.

  • Adheres to prescription refill protocol.

  • Maintains work area, exam rooms, supplies, medications, and immunizations.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)

Required Licensing & Certifications:

  • American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP) Registered Orthopedic Technician (ROT) certification (preferred at hire, required within 6 months of hire)

  • BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, required within 30 days for BSMH, required at hire for RSFH)

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Health career Association (NHA); Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NCRMA); National Association for Health Professionals, National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (preferred)

Experience:

  • Previous clinical experience in an equivalent setting (preferred)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrates appropriate application of age specific standards, policies and procedures and guidelines in caring for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients

  • Demonstrates general computer skills including data entry, word processing, email, and records management.

  • Analytical abilities to evaluate patient condition, capabilities and progress.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with co-workers, physicians, patients and families.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills.

  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
