Orthopedic Technician Assistant Manager, OPA – Anchorage, Full‑time

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

In a collaborative environment and working under the guidance of physicians, the Orthopedic Technician Assistant Manager supports the Orthopedic Technician Manager in leading a multi‑location team of Casting Technicians. In addition to leadership duties, the Lead will perform the typical duties of a Casting Technician, including:

• Teach patients to use walking aids such as canes and crutches, fit and adjust equipment as necessary.
• Apply and remove plaster and synthetic casts.
• Inform patients about the risks of treatment.
• Under the guidance of surgeons, fabricate splints and manage other simple medical technology, including braces and prosthetic limbs.

Representative Duties

• Work in tandem with Orthopedic Technician Manager to ensure compliance of department and medical practice policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Observe and enforce safety protocols for all orthopedic technician department modalities.
• Communicate with physicians, support staff, and other health caret professional to facilitate department operations.
• Responsible for scheduling and maintaining workload requirements and respond to competing priorities in daily operations.
• Oversee the availability of resources, supplies, and support staff to conduct In‑Office Procedures.
• Assist Material Management with initiating requisitions for faulty equipment and coordination of scheduled maintenance of medical equipment.
• Perform and teach splinting, casting, and application of traction, braces and other devices under the direction of an orthopedic physician or physician assistant.
• Perform direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an orthopedic technologist and specific training, assisting orthopedic physician with dressing changes, suture and pin removal, incision and drainage, reducing fractures, etc.
• Educate patients and staff regarding proper care and use of appliances.
• Document the care administered.
• In coordination with Material Management, oversee and order all casting, clinical, DME, and patient supplies, including instruments.
• Stock supply/DME rooms as needed.
• Coordinate Material Management returns and new item requests.
• Monitor and report custom DME to Billing Department.
• Clean and autoclave instruments.
• Orient and provide on‑the‑job training in casting and splinting to resident physicians and staff.
• Perform other duties as needed or assigned by direct supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Principles and techniques of casting, splinting, wound care and asepsis techniques, procedures and protocols.
• Anatomy and physiology necessary; includes body mechanics and patient movement.
• Basic surgical protocols; sterile draping, skin preparation, instrument and post‑procedural wound care/dressing.
• Ordering and procuring appropriate daily inventory to accommodate daily orthopedic casting/splinting/wound care/in‑office procedure needs.
• Understanding of leadership and team principles.
• Tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions.
• Understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families.
• Application of casting, splinting, orthopedic appliances, and patient positioning.
• Identifying equipment issues, documentation, and notification.
• Following infection control and clinical safety procedures.
• Work closely with Orthopedic Technician Manager to disseminate information, plan, prioritize, and delegate tasks to casting team.
• Motivate casting team.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
• Help manager maintain the Ortho Tech Schedule and ensure a fair and equitable work in times of critical manpower.
• Apply verbal and written instructions and standardized work practices.
• Learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.

Education & Experience

Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).

Preferred Experience: Leadership experience in addition to Medical Assistant or orthopedic technology certificate or related associate’s degree.
