Job summary

Baton Rouge General is seeking an Orthopedic Technologist to provide technical and clinical support in orthopedic care. You will assist with immobilization therapies, casts, splints, braces, and other devices, while educating patients and families on care and safety.

Under supervision, you will help with procedures, daily clinic operations, and ensure high standards of patient safety. The role emphasizes teamwork, communication, and adherence to HIPAA and infection prevention practices.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in an orthopedic clinic, urgent care, or ER with casting/splinting.
  • Strong understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy and sterile processing.
  • Experience applying, adjusting, and removing casts, splints, braces, and devices.
  • Assist providers with procedures and patient education.
  • Excellent communication, patient service, and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of the orthopedic physician, provide technical and clinical support for orthopedic patients.
  • Assist with immobilization therapies, procedures, patient education, and daily clinic operations while maintaining safety and care.
  • Apply, adjust, modify, and remove casts, splints, traction devices, and other immobilization equipment as directed.
  • Fit and adjust braces, boots, and supportive devices for proper function and patient comfort.
  • Assist with minor procedures including reductions, injections, dressing changes, and other treatments.
  • Remove sutures, staples, and dressings using established protocols.
  • Monitor patient status and communicate concerns to providers.
  • Educate patients and families on cast care, splint care, safety, mobility, and devices.

Orthopedic Technologist
What We're Looking For
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in an orthopedic clinic, urgent care, or emergency room setting specializing in casting and splinting
  • Strong understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy, medical terminology, and sterile processing techniques
  • Experience applying, adjusting, and removing casts, splints, braces, and orthopedic devices
  • Ability to assist providers with clinical procedures and patient education
  • Excellent communication, patient service, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift, position, and assist patients
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant, Orthopedic Technologist, or Military Medic program
  • Registered Orthopedic Technologist (ROT)
  • Certified Orthopedic Technologist (OTC)

What You Will Do

  • Fit and adjust orthopedic braces, boots, and supportive devices to ensure proper function and patient comfort.
  • Assist physicians with minor procedures, including reductions, injections, dressing changes, and other orthopedic treatments.
  • Remove sutures, staples, and dressings using appropriate clinical techniques and established protocols.
  • Monitor patient status and communicate concerns, complications, or changes in condition to providers.
  • Educate patients and families on cast care, splint care, safety precautions, mobility restrictions, and proper use of assistive devices.
  • Reinforce treatment plans and provider instructions while addressing routine patient questions.
  • Prepare examination and procedure rooms to support efficient patient care delivery.
  • Maintain and stock clinical supplies, equipment, and casting materials.
  • Ensure cleanliness, organization, and readiness of casting and treatment areas.
  • Support clinic workflow and perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations, safety standards, infection prevention practices, and organizational policies.
  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service, professionalism, and collaboration with physicians, staff, patients, and families.
