Job Summary

To provide direct patient care to orthodontic patients within a Kaiser Permanente dental office.

Responsibilities
  1. Instruct patients in proper orthodontic oral hygiene techniques, including the use of elastics, separators, face bows, removable appliances, and proper tooth brushing.
  2. Perform functions such as removing cement from bands, re-cementing loose bands, taking impressions, removing discomfort-causing appliance parts, and evaluating patients for loose or broken bands or brackets, provided the dentist is on the premises.
  3. Place and remove ligature ties, arch wires, and interarch elastics; select and size bands; and prepare study models for procedures like indirect bonding.
  4. Photograph patients for diagnosis, label and record models, photographs, and x-rays, and finish study models per orthodontist’s criteria.
  5. Trace cephalometric x-rays for diagnostic purposes as instructed by the orthodontist.
Qualifications

Education: Must complete an accredited dental assisting program and a course in Orthodontic assisting approved by the Board, passing the DANB exams.

Licenses & Certifications: Oregon Dental Radiation Proficiency Certificate required at hire; Expanded Function Orthodontic Dental Assistant Certificate within 6 months; BLS within 3 months.

Additional Requirements
  • Demonstrate competence in four-handed dentistry, knowledge of dental materials, ability to follow instructions, and work effectively under supervision.
  • Maintain excellent attendance and be capable of working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Pass a clinical pre-employment skills test.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of dental assisting experience, preferably in orthodontics.
  • Knowledge of sterilization and infection control.
Additional Notes
  • Work days and times vary; travel to North Lancaster and Skyline dental offices.
