Job summary

Candor Consulting & Diagnostics is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to empower students with visual impairments to navigate their educational environments with independence. You will work with ARD committees to develop IEPs/IFSPs and deliver specialized instruction using cane techniques, spatial awareness, and assistive technology, including GPS devices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, or related field.
• ACVREP certification as Orientation and Mobility Specialist.
• Texas EC-12 certification preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in cane techniques, spatial awareness, and use of assistive tech including GPS devices.
• Monitor progress with data to adjust strategies toward mobility goals.

• Education:Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, or a related field.

• Certification:Valid certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). Texas Educator Certification in Special Education (EC‑12) is preferred but not required.

• Additional Requirements:Knowledge of special education laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and familiarity with the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process. CPR certification is preferred.

• Language Proficiency:Bilingual skills are preferred but not required

Your Role:

As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you’ll play a crucial role in helping students with visual impairments develop independence, access their educational environment, and achieve their goals. Your responsibilities will include:

• Develop Individualized Plans:Collaborate with the ARD committee to create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) focused on orientation and mobility needs.

• Provide Specialized Instruction:Teach students skills for safe and effective navigation, including cane techniques, spatial awareness, environmental assessment, and use of assistive technology such as GPS devices or low-vision aids.

• Monitor Progress:Collect and analyze data to assess student growth and adjust instructional strategies to ensure students meet their orientation and mobility goals.

• Collaborate with Teams:Work closely with teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and families to integrate orientation and mobility skills into the student’s overall educational plan. Actively participate in ARD meetings and multidisciplinary discussions.

• Promote Safety and Independence:Develop and implement plans that prioritize student safety in various environments, including school, home, and the community, while fostering independence and confidence.

• Support Transition Goals:Prepare students for post-secondary environments by teaching community travel, public transportation use, and workplace navigation as part of their transition services.
