Job summary

Candor Consulting & Diagnostics is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to develop IEPs/IFSPs and teach mobility skills, including cane techniques and GPS-assisted navigation for students with vision needs. You will work with ARD teams, families, and educators to monitor progress, adapt strategies, and promote safety, independence, and successful postsecondary transitions.

Competitive pay starts at $45 per hour with flexible full-time/part-time roles, comprehensive benefits, retirement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, or a related field is required.
  • ACVREP-certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist is required; EC-12 preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of IDEA and ARD processes; CPR certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop IEPs/IFSPs focused on orientation and mobility needs with ARD involvement.
  • Teach navigation skills, cane techniques, spatial awareness, and use of assistive tech.
  • Monitor student progress; adjust instruction to meet mobility goals.
  • Collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, and families to integrate mobility skills into plans.
  • Promote safety and independence across school, home, and community.
  • Prepare students for post-secondary environments through community travel and public transportation navigation.

What We’re Looking For:
  • Education:Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, or a related field.
  • Certification:Valid certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). Texas Educator Certification in Special Education (EC-12) is preferred but not required.
  • Additional Requirements:Knowledge of special education laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and familiarity with the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process. CPR certification is preferred.
  • Language Proficiency:Bilingual skills are preferred but not required
Your Role:
  • Develop Individualized Plans:Collaborate with the ARD committee to create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) focused on orientation and mobility needs.
  • Provide Specialized Instruction:Teach students skills for safe and effective navigation, including cane techniques, spatial awareness, environmental assessment, and use of assistive technology such as GPS devices or low-vision aids.
  • Monitor Progress:Collect and analyze data to assess student growth and adjust instructional strategies to ensure students meet their orientation and mobility goals.
  • Collaborate with Teams:Work closely with teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and families to integrate orientation and mobility skills into the student’s overall educational plan. Actively participate in ARD meetings and multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Promote Safety and Independence:Develop and implement plans that prioritize student safety in various environments, including school, home, and the community, while fostering independence and confidence.
  • Support Transition Goals:Prepare students for post-secondary environments by teaching community travel, public transportation use, and workplace navigation as part of their transition services.
