Job summary

Schoolforce Solutions is seeking an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter/Orientation and Mobility role for the school year. Responsibilities center on O&M instruction, IEP collaboration, and compliance with PDE/IDEA standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Orientation and Mobility, Visual Impairment, Special Education, or related field.
  • Current ACVREP Orientation and Mobility Specialist certification.
  • PA Visual Impairment teaching certification preferred if required by district.

Responsibilities

  • Provide orientation and mobility instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired per IEPs.
  • Assess students’ O&M needs and develop instructional goals and service plans.
  • Teach safe travel skills including long canes, public transport, and route planning.
  • Instruct spatial concepts, sensory awareness, orientation techniques, and independent travel.
  • Conduct functional mobility assessments and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and conferences with families.
  • Collaborate with TVIs, general education teachers, and related service providers.
  • Maintain documentation and records per PDE, IDEA, and state/federal regs.
  • Stay current on best practices and assistive technology.

Education

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility, Visual Impairment, Special Education, or a related field
ACVREP Orientation and Mobility Specialist certification
Pennsylvania Visual Impairment teaching certification preferred

Job description

We are looking for a talented American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter for the school year.

Hourly Rate Range:

$55.00-$70.00 per hour

Responsibilities would include:
  • Provide orientation and mobility (O&M) instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Assess students' orientation and mobility needs and develop individualized instructional goals and service plans.
  • Teach safe and effective travel skills, including the use of long canes, public transportation, environmental awareness, and route planning.
  • Instruct students in spatial concepts, sensory awareness, orientation techniques, and independent travel skills in school, home, community, and vocational settings.
  • Conduct functional mobility assessments and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support student independence and educational success.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and parent conferences to provide recommendations related to orientation and mobility services.
  • Collaborate with Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TVIs), general education teachers, related service providers, and families to ensure students receive appropriate accommodations and support.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, service logs, progress reports, and records in compliance with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), IDEA, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Stay current on best practices, assistive technology, and advancements in orientation and mobility instruction.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility, Visual Impairment, Special Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP).
  • Pennsylvania teaching certification in Visual Impairment is preferred if required by the employing school district or intermediate unit.
  • Experience providing orientation and mobility services to children and adolescents in educational settings preferred.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology, adaptive travel techniques, and best practices for students with visual impairments.
  • Successful completion of required fingerprinting, criminal background checks, and all Pennsylvania pre-employment clearances.
