Job Description

Summary: The Orientation and Mobility (O&M) specialist in the Adult Comprehensive Program helps clients with visual impairments travel independently and safely. The role involves providing direct and consultative services to enable clients to navigate various environments, including home, educational settings, community, airports, and transportation modes like taxis, Uber, or Lyft.

Responsibilities
  • Provide O&M services to clients in the Adult Program, including at colleges, workplaces, and community sites. Offer consultation and direct services to clients and families.
  • Assess referrals to determine clients' current skills and recommend suitable O&M services.
  • Teach all aspects of O&M, including concept development, low vision skills, orientation skills, mobility devices, and techniques to maximize independence.
  • Collaborate with team members, supported education, Valley Metro, and families, providing education on blindness, ADA certification, and family support.
  • Maintain case records, reports, and handle administrative tasks.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of adult O&M development, impact of eye conditions, multi-disability considerations, and teaching techniques.
  • Ability to perform O&M services per established standards.
  • Effective communication with clients, team members, counselors, families, and community organizations.
  • Ability to work independently, organize, manage time efficiently, analyze situations, and produce clear reports and emails.
  • Proficiency with computers and software applications.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Maintain required licenses and certifications.
  • Eligible for ACVREP certification as an O&M Specialist.
  • Level IVP Fingerprint Clearance card.
  • Master’s degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited institution.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Willingness to travel between job sites.
