Job description

Join ICF in a new laboratory facility with current instrumentation in support of a contract with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at the Region 9 Laboratory in Corvallis, Oregon.

ICF is seeking an Organic Environmental Chemist to lead a team of 3-5 technicians and chemists on the Environmental Services Assistance Team (ESAT) contract supporting EPA Region 9. This team performs analyses and provides technical and quality assurance (QA) support to EPA Superfund and other programs to facilitate the identification, assessment, remediation, and regulation of environmental hazards. The team conducts soil, water, air, waste, and tissue sample analysis for chemical contaminants using EPA-approved methods.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct supervision of the technicians and chemists in the Organic group.
  2. Report directly to the Laboratory Lead.
  3. Ensure compliance with all technical, Quality Assurance, and Health, Safety, and Environmental Management requirements.
  4. Provide technical input and guidance to help resolve sample matrix or instrument performance issues for the analyses performed.
  5. Monitor the analytical request backlog and allocate staff resources accordingly.
  6. Perform secondary review of all data generated by the Organic group and generate/review client deliverables.
  7. Interact with and present to clients as needed.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or physical science.
  • 8+ years of experience performing and/or managing organic preparation and analysis of environmental samples using SW-846, CLP, or AWWA Standard Methods.
  • 2+ years of experience supervising an environmental analysis group of comparable size.
  • Proficiency with data acquisition, processing, review, and reporting via instrument software and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Experience in a NELAC, A2LA, or DOECAP accredited environmental laboratory is required.
  • Experience with employee performance evaluation and management.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US.
  • Must be able to pass an EPA background check to access US federal property.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Recent hands-on experience with instrument operation, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance for GC, GC/MS, LC, LC/MS/MS, headspace analysis, and EPA sample preparation methods.
  • Experience with analysis of emerging contaminants including PFAS compounds.
  • Proficiency in Root Cause Analysis and implementing Corrective Actions.
  • Recent experience with analytical method development for environmental samples.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Pay Range: The pay for this role ranges from $73,371 to $124,730, based on experience, skills, certifications, location, and other factors.
