Job summary

Iowa Donor Network is seeking an Organ Donation Coordinator to maximize donation opportunities and coordinate donor management across multiple hospitals in Iowa. You will lead medical coordination with ICU teams, oversee donor testing, and work with families and transplant centers to improve outcomes.

The role requires clinical coordination experience, critical care knowledge, and ability to travel. Position is full-time with a mix of on-site and potential remote work based on role requirements.

Qualifications

• Must be a Licensed Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Paramedic/EMT, or prior experience working as a clinical coordinator in another OPO.
• Experience in medical/surgical critical care, trauma, or emergency care in a hospital setting is required.
• Ability to obtain ACLS, PALS, and BLS certifications.

Responsibilities

• Gather and assess patient medical records and DRAI to evaluate donation suitability.
• Work with ICU teams to care for critically ill patients and maximize donation potential.
• Coordinate serological and histocompatibility testing and post-donor chart submissions.
• Collaborate with Family Services, Hospital Services, and transplant centers to increase donation.
• Participate in meetings, quality initiatives, and required training.

Schedule: 10 shifts every 4 weeks. Shifts will be a combination of both 12 and 24 hour shifts, on both days and nights, plus required holidays and weekends

Position Summary:

The Organ Donation Coordinator is responsible for maximizing donation and transplantation opportunities in compliance with industry standards. The coordinator evaluates and coordinates the medical management of the organ donor to maximize organ function. The Organ Donation coordinator also works with a team to facilitate allocation of organs and coordinate the organ recovery process.

Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities:

• Gather and accurately assess patient medical records and Donor Risk Assessment Interview (DRAI) to evaluate suitability for organ donation.
• Recognize and treat pathophysiological effects of brain death.
• Work with multidisciplinary hospital teams to assess, treat and care for critically ill patients in the ICU
• Medically manage organ donors to maximize the gift of donation.
• Obtain specimens and coordinate serological and histocompatibility testing.
• Complete post donor chart submission for quality assurance per defined timelines.
• Collaborate with Family Services and Hospital Services to increase donation.
• Collaborate closely with Iowa Donor Network clinical team members, donor hospital staff and physicians, transplant center representatives, and other essential stakeholders and partners.
• Participate in departmental meetings, educational activities, quality assurance initiatives, and required training as assigned.

Position Qualifications and Education Requirements:

• Must be a Licensed Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Paramedic/EMT, or prior experience working as a clinical coordinator in another OPO.
• Prior experience and current knowledge of medical/surgical critical care, trauma, or emergency care in the hospital setting required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an ACLS, PALS, and BLS certification.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and personal auto insurance.
• Bachelor’s Degree or Higher, preferred.
• CPTC certification, preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Duties of the position require travel or onsite response to execute essential job functions required in the facilitation of the donation process.
• Must receive required vaccines based on outlined schedules to protect our employees, healthcare personnel, donors, recipients, and families we may come into contact. (e.g., Influenza obtained annually by December 1 st .)
• Maintain a current valid driver’s license and be insurable through IDN’s insurance.
• Respond to call/page within 10 minutes and arrive to office within one hour of call or as assigned.
• Work a rotating on-call schedule with extended hours.
• Lift equipment and supplies weighing 50 lbs and occasionally up to 75 lbs.
• Travel to the office and donor hospitals throughout the state of Iowa at any given hour of the day or night.
• Stooping, kneeling, reaching, and handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with hands).
• Express ideas verbally and convey detailed or important spoken information
• Capability to travel by vehicle or plane
