Job description

Cleveland-Cliffs, Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad has an immediate opening for an Ore Dock Laborer. This position is a full-time, seasonal position as determined by seniority due to the shipping season on the Great Lakes – shipping seasons typically run the mid/end of March through mid-January.

Performs any combination of general ore dock tasks, in all weather conditions, including cleaning and maintaining iron ore docks and its machinery in safe, working order during seasonal shipping.Work activities are sporadic/seasonal requiring year round general fitness/conditioning for work readiness.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Ascend/descend approximately 100 stairs to perform duties on ore dock topside and at base of ore dock
  • Safely and efficiently unloads iron ore pellets from freight cars and closes freight car floor hatchways, manually and/or with mechanical machinery
  • Loosens iron ore pellets in rail cars, storage silos, and doorways with manual tools and motorized equipment
  • Cleans pellet spillage alongside freight cars and at base of docks manually with hand tools and mechanical sweeper
  • Safely performs any other work of laborers as assigned by the supervisor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Must practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries. Must utilize all protective equipment as assigned/required.
  • Must have the ability and willingness to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Excellent reading, communication and computerdata entryskills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must have the ability to become and remain General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) qualified.
  • Ore Dock Foremen are subject to CFR Part 219 Control of Alcohol & Drug Use and CFR Part 228 Covered Service Regulations.
  • Must have the ability to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals to fractions to solve practical problems.
  • Requires full, normal flexibility in all joints to perform work at/above shoulder level, ascending/descending ore dock stairway, ladders, freight cars, mechanical trapper unit, forward bending, squatting, twisting or any combination of these movements to perform general duties.
  • Must have the ability to push/pull or lift, exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Must have the ability to perform continuous physical tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Periodically, duties require fall protection harnessing.
  • Must have the ability to stand/walk on level and uneven ground.
  • Regular exposure to extreme outside weather conditions, temperatures and elements with occasional exposure to fumes, noise, dust, dirt and vibrations at heights up to 80 feet.
  • Must have the ability to safely and efficiently work at heights up to 80 feet.
  • May be required to permanently fill other assignments or positions by appointment per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in all weather conditions. You may be required to work various shifts, overtime, holidays and weekends.
  • All positions require pre-employment background verification, physical and pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must be available to work 365 days a year - days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous railroad and/or laborer/construction experience
