Job Description

The Order Entry Technician plays a key role on the front line of the pharmacy by handling order entry and triage for all incoming prescriptions and communications. This position receives and processes drug orders from long-term care facilities and healthcare professionals, answers medication-related questions, and ensures accurate patient profiles and prescription information. The role relies heavily on data entry, customer service, and the use of Frameworks and Frameworks ECM systems in a closed-door, noncustomer-facing environment with a set schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain accurate and up-to-date patient profiles in the pharmacy systems.
  • Receive prescriptions and refill requests from long-term care facilities, pharmacists, nurses, and physicians, ensuring all information is complete and accurate.
  • Process prescriptions using third-party insurance billing, verifying coverage and resolving basic billing issues as needed.
  • Pick up incoming phone calls and direct them appropriately, serving as the first point of contact for the pharmacy.
  • Handle all incoming phone calls, faxes, and electronic orders, triaging documents and orders to the appropriate team members for order typing and further processing.
  • Take in drug orders via fax and other electronic formats, reviewing details for accuracy and completeness before entry.
  • Enter prescription orders into the system with high attention to detail, including correct use of SIG codes and label information.
  • Answer questions from facilities and patients regarding medications and general order status, referring callers to a pharmacist for clinical medication information when needed.
  • Utilize Frameworks and Frameworks ECM to manage orders, patient profiles, and documentation efficiently.
  • Support a consistent workflow in a repetitive but detail-oriented role, managing a variety of orders that require careful review and correct processing.
  • Collaborate with other pharmacy team members to ensure timely and accurate handling of all incoming orders and communications.
Essential Skills
  • Registered pharmacy technician with the State of Minnesota; national certification alone does not meet this requirement.
  • Minimum of 6 months of pharmacy experience, with practical knowledge and familiarity with SIG codes to recognize and interpret prescription labels.
  • Proficiency in data entry with strong accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Customer service experience, including handling phone calls and assisting facilities and patients with questions.
  • Ability to verify completeness and accuracy of prescription and refill request information.
  • Capability to process prescriptions using third-party insurance billing systems.
  • Effective verbal communication skills for interacting with long-term care facilities, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and patients.
  • Ability to triage incoming phone calls, faxes, and electronic orders and route them appropriately.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to learn and use pharmacy software systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working as a pharmacy technician in a long-term care or closed-door pharmacy setting is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with SIG codes and pharmacy terminology to support efficient order entry and label interpretation.
  • Comfort working in a repetitive, process-driven role while maintaining focus and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple incoming orders and communications simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently at an assigned desk while collaborating effectively with the broader pharmacy team.
  • Interest in contributing to a growing pharmacy operation with opportunities to support process improvement and high-quality service.
Work Environment

This position operates in a closed-door, office-style pharmacy environment that is not customer-facing. The Order Entry Technician works at an individual desk, using computer systems including Frameworks and Frameworks ECM to manage patient profiles, orders, and documentation. The role is repetitive in nature, with a steady flow of varied orders that require time and attention to process correctly. The team is responsible for handling all incoming phone calls, faxes, and electronic orders, serving as the front line of the pharmacy. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with no regular weekend shifts, though there may be an occasional requirement to work approximately every fourth weekend depending on coverage needs.
