Responsibilities

• Consult with patient/parent/guardian about dental status and treatment options.

• Administer anesthesia and perform surgical procedures including implants and extractions.
• Provide emergency treatment for orofacial injuries and postoperative care.
• Supervise dental assistants and ensure clinic compliance with guidelines.
• Travel between clinics as needed and participate in on-call schedule.

Job description

Oral Surgeon

Specializes in surgeries of the mouth, gums, teeth, neck and jaws. Consult with patients about treatment options, perform surgeries and keep abreast of the latest advances in surgical and dental technology.

Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

• Coordinate the preparation of reports and written documentation as required by the department, company and State and Federal agencies.
• Maintain proper, detailed and accurate dental records.
• Travels between clinics to work, as needed.
• Willingness to be on-call, as scheduled, by the Dental Director/Administrative Director (AD).
• Willingness to assist Clinic Manager/AD in supervising the dental staff and assuring that clinic is compliant with State and Federal guidelines.
• Meet productivity goals, as set by the Arkansas Children's Hospital organization and assist the AD, and work with dental staff to accomplish that goal.
• Maintain a professional demeanor with patients, staff and administration.
• Perform other tasks, as directed by the Dental Director/AD, as needed to meet clinic or organization goals.
• Supervise Dental Assistants with whom he/she works.
• Understand the organization's commitment to provide high quality patient care. Promote a patient-centered environment.
• Examine and diagnose and treat dental conditions to provide optimum care to patients.

JOB DESCRIPTION

• Consult with the patient/parent/guardian and advise them of dental status and required treatment.
• Educate patients regarding oral conditions, provide treatment options and explain to the patient/parent/guardian the risks, benefits and alternatives of each option.
• Consulting with patients and analyzing patient data to determine patient needs and treatment goals.
• Collaborating with other specialists, such as restorative dentists and orthodontists, to plan treatments.
• Recording patient care by maintaining detailed notes of appointments with patients, including comments, tests, and/or treatments prescribed, and test results.
• Administering general and local anesthetics, when necessary.
• Performing surgical procedures to extract impacted or damaged teeth, place dental implants, and remove tumors and other abnormal growths of the oral and/or facial regions.
• Prescribing medication to improve recovery and control pain after procedures.
• Treating infections of the oral cavity, salivary glands, jaw, face, and neck.
• Providing emergency treatment of orofacial injuries including facial lacerations, intraoral lacerations, and fractured facial bones.
• Performing minor cosmetic procedures, such as chin and cheekbone enhancements.
• Providing support and advice to patients receiving long-term care.
• Conducting research on defects, diseases, and disorders affecting the oral and/or facial regions.
• Prepares charts and determines the most feasible plan for treatment. Maintains charts and treatment plans and completes required reports.
• Administer anesthetics to limit the amount of pain experienced by patient during procedure.
• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, receiving current literature and attending in-service meetings and workshops.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Education: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) and successful completion of an oral surgery residency approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
