Job description

Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire (W2)
Location: Remote — candidates based in Tulsa, OK or Tempe/Phoenix, AZ strongly preferred
Compensation: Up to $140,000, based on experience
Reports To: Manager, Database Services
Team: You + a hands-on working Manager (2-person Database Services team)

The Opportunity

Our client is hiring a hands-on Oracle DBA to be the primary database administrator on a small, high-trust Database Services team. This is a mostly remote role - the Manager is onsite in Tulsa roughly once a week, and you'll have the flexibility to work remotely from Tulsa, OK, or Tempe/Phoenix, AZ. That flexibility comes with real accountability: you'll own the environment day to day, with the Manager acting as a secondary DBA and organizational point of contact rather than someone directing your daily work.

This is a great fit for someone who wants genuine technical ownership without a lot of management overhead - you're trusted to run the environment, make the calls, and be the expert in the room.

Why This Role Stands Out
  • Real autonomy, real impact. With a manager onsite only once a week, you'll be expected to self-manage your workload, priorities, and technical decisions. Your judgment drives the work.
  • Meaty technical environment. The core production system is a two-node Oracle RAC cluster with a Data Guard standby- this isn't a single-instance shop. If you enjoy RAC and Data Guard work, this is where you'll spend your time.
  • A real technical partner, not a manager looking over your shoulder. The Manager is a working DBA too - someone to bounce ideas off of, not someone reviewing every move.
  • Room to build, not just maintain. Performance tuning, index/storage remediation, security hardening, a version upgrade, and an infrastructure migration are all on the roadmap - you'll have a hand in shaping how the environment evolves.
  • No trial by fire. You'll get real ramp-up time to learn the system before being expected to drive major changes.
What You'll Own

Production Database Administration

  • Serve as the primary Oracle DBA for a production RAC environment with Data Guard standby
  • Monitor and tune performance using OEM, AWR, ASH, and ADDM
  • Manage storage, capacity planning, and tablespace health
  • Own the patching and version management schedule
  • Own incident response - diagnose root cause and implement durable fixes, not band-aids
  • Manage backup/recovery procedures alongside the infrastructure team

Performance & Optimization

  • Resolve SQL plan instability using SPM baselines and SQL Profiles
  • Design indexing strategies based on real application usage patterns
  • Tune connection pools, RAC-specific configuration, and parallel execution
  • Diagnose and remediate locking, contention, and wait event issues

Security & Standards

  • Manage Oracle accounts, roles, profiles, and least-privilege service accounts
  • Enforce session controls, password policies, and audit configuration
  • Partner with developers on stored procedure design and code review
  • Build out DBA documentation, runbooks, and operational standards
  • Work with application, dev, and infrastructure teams
  • Coordinate with the external infrastructure vendor on migration work
  • Weigh in on architecture decisions and project planning
What We're Looking For

Must-Haves

  • 5+ years of hands-on Oracle DBA experience in production environments
  • Proven, hands-on production experience with Oracle RAC (specifically a 2-node cluster) and Data Guard- this is a core requirement, not a nice-to-have
  • Strong SQL and PL/SQL skills - able to read and write production code, not just execute scripts
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager, AWR, ASH, ADDM, and execution plan analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and self-manage - this role has minimal day-to-day oversight, so a self-starter mindset is essential
  • Comfortable operating with broad technical ownership on a small, lean team

Strongly Preferred

  • Oracle patching and version upgrade planning/execution
  • Index lifecycle management, partitioning, and large table reorganization
  • SQL Plan Management (SPM) and SQL Profiles
  • Connection pool administration (DRCP or shared server)
  • Oracle APEX and/or ORDS administration
  • Experience with infrastructure or storage migrations
  • Strong documentation and runbook-writing habits

Nice to Have

  • OCP certification or equivalent
  • Background in financial services or transaction-processing environments
Who Thrives Here

You're a technician at heart - happiest diagnosing, fixing, or building rather than sitting in meetings talking about it. You're methodical, you document as you go, and you don't call something fixed until you understand why it broke. You're comfortable being the go-to expert with minimal hand-holding, and you've walked into environments with a backlog before and seen it as an opportunity, not a burden.
