Job Description
This position is accountable for the care and the safety of patients in the OR. The incumbent performs routine and delegated duties according to Connecticut Children’s standards, policies and procedures. This includes scrubbing and other related duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to maintain sterility during surgical procedures.
Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Identifies core cases for assigned services. For these cases the Surgical Technologist is able to:
- Perform first scrub role, directly assisting the surgeon by passing sterile instruments and supplies at the sterile field.
- Predict and anticipate surgeon’s requests based on knowledge of the case.
- Distinguish between core and specialty cases in each service.
- Recognize duties associated with the second scrub role, including but not limited to: holding retractors, sponging or suctioning operative site, applying electrocautery within the surgical technologist’s scope of practice, as directed by the surgeon.
- Collaborate with circulating RN to correctly account for countable items at the sterile field according to policy and procedure.
- Assist RN in gathering appropriate supplies for cases.
- Responsible for mixing, labeling and administering all drugs and solutions dispensed to the sterile field.
- Assure and maintain supply of fluids, solutions and drugs.
- Identify specific care needs as related to the patient’s age group.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with preparation, maintenance and after-care of supplies, equipment, and facilities with the OR.
- Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arrange instruments, according to instructions.
- Demonstrate the ability to wash and sterilize equipment when necessary following manufacture’s recommended instructions.
- Assist team members to place and position patients on the Operating Room table.
- Scrub arms and hands appropriately and dons gown and gloves. Aids OR team members to don gown and gloves.
- Apply dressings post-surgery.
- Must be able to take call independently within 12 months of hire.
- Commit to lifelong learning and professional development by obtaining 15 continuing education equivalents per year.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and coworkers.

Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program.
License and/or Certification Required:
- Current certification as Certified Surgical Technologist (or certification acquired within 6 months of hire) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR in adult, child & infant is required upon hire and maintained.
