RWJBarnabas Health is seeking an Operating Room Technologist I to join our Operating Room team at Jersey City Medical Center. This role focuses on room preparation, scrub support, sterile technique, and patient care during procedures in a high-volume surgical environment.

You will collaborate with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and perioperative staff to deliver safe, efficient, and compassionate care, while upholding infection control and safety standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician training program.
• Current AST certification and BLS certification required.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced surgical environment with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Prepare operating rooms for procedures by ensuring instruments and supplies are available and sterile.
• Provide scrub support to surgeons and nursing staff throughout a variety of procedures.
• Maintain sterile technique and infection prevention practices during every procedure.
• Handle, organize, and pass surgical instruments and equipment accurately.
• Assist with direct patient care before, during, and after surgery to ensure safety and comfort.
• Support instrument cleaning and preparation between cases.
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and perioperative team for coordinated care.
• Participate in quality improvement and ongoing professional development.

A typical day for an Operating Room Technologist may include:

• Preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures by ensuring instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies are available, organized, and functioning properly
• Assisting surgeons, registered nurses, and other members of the surgical team by providing skilled scrub support throughout a variety of surgical procedures
• Anticipating the needs of the surgical team and responding efficiently to maintain a smooth, safe, and effective operative environment
• Maintaining sterile technique and adhering to infection prevention, aseptic practices, and organizational policies throughout every procedure
• Handling, organizing, and passing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment with accuracy and attention to detail
• Assisting with direct patient care activities before, during, and after surgery while supporting patient safety, comfort, and dignity
• Supporting the maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of surgical instruments and operating room equipment between procedures
• Collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and other perioperative team members to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care
• Participating in quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and ongoing professional development to support clinical excellence and continuous learning
• Practicing within the legal and professional scope of the Operating Room Technician role while maintaining compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.
