Job summary

Cooper University Health Care is seeking a dedicated perfusion support role to work with the manager of Perfusion and other staff perfusionists to provide clinical services within the scope of the practice at Cooper University Hospital.

Responsibilities include cell saver and platelet gel therapy support, assistance with transport, and maintaining equipment and documentation. The position requires CPR certification within 6 months and flexibility for variable hours.

Qualifications

• Desired medical experience or completion of related medical/science courses.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Currently enrolled in or completed allied health program is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist in set-up, priming, break down and cleaning of heart-lung machine and related equipment.
• Support perfusion before, during and after cardiac procedures.
• Learn documentation and charting requirements for perfusion cases.
• Assist with patient transport to and from OR and unit beds as needed.
• Cross-train to support other OR areas under supervision.

Short Description

Works with the manager of Perfusion and other staff perfusionist or OR managers to provide clinical services and patient care within the scope of the practice at Cooper University Hospital Essential Functions:

• Clinical duties include cell saver and platelet gel therapy, assist in transport of intra-aortic balloon.
• Learn proper documentation and charting requirements for cell saver and platelet gel cases.
• Support perfusion before, during and after cardiac surgical procedures: set-up, prime, break down, cleaning of heart-lung machine, cell saver machine and heater coolers.
• Assist with transporting patients to and from OR bed and to and from unit bed if necessary.
• Assist with the POC responsibilities such as with our anticoagulation devices, 5 cell saver machines, 2 platelet gel machines, etc.
• Learn the specific maintenance/cleaning/disinfection process of all heater-coolers/cell savers/platelet gel machines and our heart lung machines
• Assists with maintaining log for bi-monthly outdates of all supplies related to perfusion.
• Assists with maintaining log for the cleaning and disinfection process of the heater coolers and other machines noted above.
• Will learn to cross-train to assist other areas of the operating room under the direct management of Jim Higgins, the Clinical Director as well as other specialty care managers within the OR.

Experience Required

Desired previous related medical experience or completion of related medical/science level courses; communications or hospitality industry are also desirable experiences.

Education Requirements

High School diploma required:

• Certificate or degree preferred.
• Currently enrolled student in allied health profession is also desired.

Has effective verbal communication and adequate written and communication skills.

License/Certification Requirements

Certification in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within 6 months of hire,

Special Requirements

Mental and Physical demands work environment:

1. Must be flexible with additional variable hours for emergencies later than forecasted scheduled shift. 2. Must be available to take call 1-2 times per week and every third weekend starting on Friday night and ending
on Monday morning at approximately 6am. 3. Must be mentally alert; required to be on your feet – standing or walking for a period of an hour or longer, bend or kneel for particular functions, sit, use hands to grasp firmly and twist or turn wrists with some force, handle of feel objects, reach with arms and hands, must be able to lift, push, or pull 50lbs or more; hearing must be normal with or without correction; vision must be normal with or without correction; understands the possibility of being exposed to blood-borne pathogens and bio-hazardous chemicals; exposure to the environment in which patient’s organs are excised, drilled, and dissected causing exposure of the internal organs and bones with the potential of massive amounts of blood.
