Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health seeks an OR Assistant for the New England Baptist Hospital ASC in Brookline, MA. This role supports the Nursing Service Department by performing assigned perioperative tasks and ensuring efficient room turnover in a high‑quality ambulatory surgical setting.

You will assist in patient positioning, safety, and cleaning between cases, while maintaining strict adherence to PPE and infection control standards. The position emphasizes teamwork and a stable daytime schedule.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Heart Saver certification required within 60 days of hire date from American Heart Association or Red Cross.
• 0-1 year of experience.

Responsibilities

• Assists in positioning and transferring of adolescent/adult/geriatric patients.
• Assists in positioning of patients for surgical procedures.
• Holds extremity(ies) for skin prep.
• Delivers PACU stretchers/patient beds to room upon request from primary/associate nurse.
• Assists in transferring patients from the OR table to the PACU or patient’s bed and assists in transferring patients to PACU when necessary.
• Responsible for prompt cleaning of the room between cases.
• Disposes of soiled linen and replaces with clean laundry bag.
• Disposes of trash and re-lines buckets with plastic liners.
• Mops floor with a clean mop and disinfectant solution (after every case).
• Empties suction canisters in hopper near the decontamination room and discards them in a biohazard trash bag.
• Replaces clean suction canisters and tubing at each suction regulator in the OR.
• Washes and re-makes OR bed and/or stretcher.
• Wipes all surfaces that have been contaminated by blood, body fluid or other contaminants.
• Responsible for checking the OR bed or positioning devices for proper attachments.
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of all tables and positioning devices and attachments.
• Wipes all positioning equipment and bed attachments prior to putting away.
• Demonstrates initiative to put away extra equipment when not in use.
• Adheres to standard and resistant organism precautions.
• Wears personal protective attire appropriate for task being performed (i.e., gown, goggles, gloves).
• Promptly observes for and attends to blood or body fluid spills.
• Works effectively with other staff as a member of the surgical team.
• Responds to intercom calls in a timely manner.
• Assumes responsibility for prompt room turnover times.
• Complies with on-call responsibilities.
• Responds within 30 minutes when on-call
• Assists staff in the PACU or other Surgical Services unit(s), as necessary.
• Plans time away from work appropriately.
• Arrives and leaves at designated times.
• Uses unplanned earned time appropriately.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Attends annual safety review.
