Job summary

The Kansas City VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for one Health Technician for the Optometry department. An Optometry Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) supports Optometrists and Ophthalmologists in diagnosis - treatment - prevention - follow-up care and patient counseling.

This role requires knowledge of eye anatomy, ability to document ophthalmic information, and basic eyewear repairs, with focus on patient education and safe infection control in a clinical setting.

Qualifications

• Citizen and English proficiency requirements per VA policy
• “Health technician (optometry)” KSAs must be demonstrated
• English language proficiency: must be proficient in spoken and written English
• Education/experience combinations acceptable under grandfathering provisions
• Grade determinations: GS-04 to GS-07 with required KSAs

Responsibilities

• Measure and record visual acuity
• Obtain ophthalmic and medical information for progress notes
• Perform basic eyewear repairs (nose pads, screws)
• Provide patient education on eye health and vision conditions
• Triage patient calls or optometry requests
• Assist with patient eye care procedures
