Job summary

The Mission Neighborhood Health Center in San Francisco is seeking an Optometrist for a temporary assignment from September 21 to September 24, 2026. This exempt role reports to the Chief Medical Officer and pays $72.00 to $78.00 per hour.

The Optometrist will perform routine vision and medical examinations under California law and MNHC policies, using independent professional judgment and provided equipment such as autorefractor, OCT, and retinal camera.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited school of optometry with OD degree.
  • Valid California Optometry license.
  • Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents Certification (T.P.A.).
  • Must have an NPI prior to employment/start date.
  • Cultural competency with diverse/low-income communities, including Spanish-speaking individuals.
  • Knowledge of modern optometric methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to perform eye examinations on children and adults.
  • Ability to write concisely and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Examine eyes using instruments to determine visual acuity and diagnose ocular diseases.
  • Prescribe eyeglasses and other treatments as needed.
  • Interpret data from exams and develop a treatment plan.
  • Complete school forms, DMV forms, and related documents as required.

Job description

The Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) is a non‑profit, multi‑site community health organization offering comprehensive health services in the Mission and Excelsior Districts of San Francisco. The center offers primary health care services, adult medicine, pediatrics, family planning, OB/GYN, HIV and homeless services. We advocate for health equity and deliver innovative, high‑quality services responsive to the neighborhoods and diverse communities we serve.

We are looking for an Optometrist to join our team on a temporary assignment from September 21 to September 24, 2026.This positionreports to the Chief Medical Officer,and is a temporary exemptrole with an hourly rate of $72.00 to $78.00 per hour.

Primary Objective:

The Optometrist - Temporary role, will perform routine vision and medical examinations using independent professional judgment in the practice of optometry within the scope of the laws of the state of California, the rules and regulations of the California Board of Optometry and the policies of MNHC.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
Healthcare Delivery
  • Examines eyes, using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose ocular diseases and other ocular abnormalities. These include conducting & documenting history, measuring refractive error, conducting visual & confrontational fields, pupil testing, ocular mobility testing, slit lamp examination, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, tear function testing, etc.
  • Prescribes eyeglasses and other treatment as needed
  • Interprets data from clinical exams, analyze test results and develop a treatment plan.
  • Performs other related duties such as completing school forms, Department of Motor Vehicle, and other like documents.
Patient Experience
  • The office has front desk staff and technician for support
  • Patient education regarding exam and findings
  • Office is equipped with autorefractor, lensometer, visual field, OCT, and retinal camera
  • No optical currently with a possibility of optical in the future
  • Practices to the extent of optometry scope and refers to ophthalmology as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from an accredited school of optometry, Doctor of Optometry degree.
  • Valid California Optometry license.
  • Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents Certification (T.P.A.)
  • Must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI) or obtain an NPI prior to employment or start date.
  • Cultural competency working with diverse/low-income communities, especially Spanish‑speaking immigrant communities.
  • Knowledge of modern optometric methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to perform eye examinations on children and adults.
  • Ability to write concisely and legibly; communicate effectively; and relate congenially to patients and staff
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with patient records and personal information
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
