Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. It involves performing ophthalmology duties such as vision assessments, eye surgeries, and managing eye diseases in patients with systemic illnesses. The position may also involve directing lower-level professionals or managing processes and programs, primarily overseeing the design, implementation, or delivery of processes, programs, and policies using specialized knowledge typically acquired through advanced education. It is a specialist-level role, often managing large projects or processes with limited oversight.

Job Overview

Under the direction of the Chief of Ophthalmology or designated physicians, this position practices optometry within professional standards and law, providing primary eye care within a multidisciplinary setting.

Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Doctor of Optometry
  2. MA Board certified in Optometry
  3. MA Optometry license
  4. One (1) year of experience in optometry
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Completion of a 1-year American Academy of Optometry approved residency program
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Performs routine and comprehensive eye exams with diagnostic pharmaceutical agents, including history, entrance exams, slit lamp exam, tonometry, refraction, retinal exam, and optic nerve evaluation. Additional testing may include Amsler Grid, Keratometry, Ultrasonography, and more.
  2. Interprets exam results to identify pathology and makes referrals when necessary. Monitors patients with limited pathology using approved pharmacological agents.
  3. Evaluates patients for contact lenses, including therapeutic and cosmetic lenses.
  4. Evaluates low vision patients and understands low vision devices and their applications.
  5. Teaches residents and technicians skills within their scope of practice.
  6. Documents patient charts and billing information.
  7. Maintains insurance credentials for plan participation.
  8. Participates in clinical quality assurance programs.
  9. Maintains collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues.
  10. Performs other related duties as required.
  11. Supervises daily workflow and activities of ophthalmic technicians.
  12. Hires, evaluates, and disciplines ophthalmic technicians in collaboration with leadership.
Physical Requirements

Normal office work environment for outpatient care.
