Overview Of Position
The primary responsibility of the Optometric Technician I is to assist the Doctor of Optometry in delivering comprehensive eye care. Must adhere to the Personnel Policies, Code of Ethics, and all licensing and accreditation standards of the position. Must represent the organization’s Mission and Key Values in all actions, communications, and representations with all contacts.
This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position typically working Monday - Friday 7:45am to 5pm, with one late night until 7pm on Tuesday or Thursday.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Obtain patient history and chief complaint information.
- Perform patient pre-testing, including visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, pupil testing, motilities, peripheral vision, and blood pressure.
- Instill eye drops using sterile techniques and explain side effects.
- Measure intraocular pressure using iCare or Tonopen.
- Administer diagnostic tests such as visual field testing, OCT, retinal photography, lensometry, etc.
- Maintain accurate electronic health records.
- Assist the doctor during eye exams and follow-up procedures.
- Facilitate referrals and schedule patients for medical or surgical needs.
- Perform administrative tasks like filing, ordering supplies, and recordkeeping.
- Prepare charts to ensure patients are due or eligible for exams.
- Adhere to compliance standards and stay updated on regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Duties And Responsibilities For School-linked Programs
- Travel to and from schools.
- Set up and tear down school clinics.
- Assist with scheduling and check-in for students.
- Maintain electronic health records.
- Assist with phone calls and escort children as needed.
- Interact professionally with school staff.
- Call parents for follow-ups or explanations.

- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required.

Education / Licenses / Certificates
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- CPR certification (offered at CH).
Experience
Ophthalmic or Medical Assistant experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equipment / Tools / Technology
- Computers, phones, copiers, Microsoft Office, Nextgen EHR, Zeiss Forum, diagnostic and exam lane equipment, intraocular pressure devices.
Physical Requirements
- Standing, sitting, mobility, grasping, finger use, reaching, stooping, kneeling, repetitive motions, visual acuity, hearing, speaking, pushing/pulling, lifting, PPE use.
Environmental Factors / Working Conditions
- Indoor office environment, exposure to blood and bodily fluids, some exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and infection risk.
Other Requirements
- Travel to other sites, wear scrubs and nonskid shoes, interact with patients.
Supervision
Work progress checked frequently. No supervisory responsibilities.
