Job summary

High Point University seeks a full-time Optometric Technician to support its School of Optometry's clinical and educational missions. The technician provides direct patient care in the clinic while assisting faculty and students in delivering high-quality optometric services and modeling professional behavior and patient-centered communication.

The role includes cross-training in administrative or optical support to enhance patient flow and align with the university's mission.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or high school diploma with relevant experience in optometry.
• 1+ year of clinical optometry experience preferred.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and basic office tech.
• Experience using EHR systems for patient documentation and chart management.
• Strong communication, organization and patient-care focus.
• Familiarity with HIPAA and OSHA regulations.

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary patient testing (visual acuity, auto-refraction, tonometry, visual fields, OCT).
• Prepare exam rooms and maintain instruments per infection control standards.
• Assist faculty and interns during patient encounters (contact lens fittings, dry eye testing, special testing).
• Document patient information and test results in the EHR system accurately.
• Manage patient flow to support clinic efficiency and patient experience.
• Guide student interns on instrument use and clinical workflow when needed.
• Participate in staff training and continuing education aligned with academic and clinical goals.
• Adhere to HIPAA, OSHA and institutional policies on patient safety and confidentiality.
• Contribute to quality assurance and clinical improvement initiatives.
• Support the university mission through a collaborative, student-centered environment.
