Job description

Snap Inc is a technology company that believes the camera presents the greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate. We contribute to human progress by empowering people to express themselves, live in the moment, learn about the world, and have fun together.

Our company has three core products: Snapchat, a visual messaging app; Lens Studio, an augmented reality platform; and Spectacles, AR glasses.

Spectacles is home to our hardware products, with a world-class research and development team focused on pushing the boundaries of what a camera can be. We are looking for an Optomechanical Engineer to join the Spectacles team.

What you’ll do:
  • Design CAD sub-assemblies and interfaces to larger CAD assemblies for optical components.
  • Perform rigorous tolerance analyses to ensure mechanical feasibility of the designs.
  • Create detailed, toleranced 2D drawings with FAI for optical and mechanical components.
  • Run structural and thermal FEA simulations to evaluate performance and reliability.
  • Evaluate and select materials capable of achieving high-quality module performance while suitable for mass production.
  • Travel to and work with overseas suppliers to manufacture components and assist with failure analysis.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with mechanical and thermal properties of glass, plastic, metal, and electrical component materials.
  • Knowledge of epoxies and their material properties.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and mechanical metrology.
  • Understanding of the basic principles of optics.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, optical engineering, mechatronics engineering, physics, or related field, or equivalent years of experience.
  • 3+ years of experience designing optical modules for high-volume consumer electronics.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with CAD design using NX.
  • Experience in opto-mechanical mounting, baffling, and housing with rigorous tolerance analysis.
  • Experience building and evaluating structural and thermal FEA models.
  • Expertise in plastic injection molding and stamped metal design, manufacturing, process, and metrology.
  • Experience with PCB design.
