Job summary

North Idaho Eye Institute is hiring a full-time optician to design, measure, order, dispense, fit and adapt lenses and frames according to prescriptions. The role requires multitasking, strong patient communication, and a team mindset to support multiple clinics across our network.

Typical pay ranges from $18.00 to $28.00 per hour depending on certification, with non-certified and certified rates specified.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 2+ years’ opticianry experience preferred.
  • ABO certification preferred; certification possible within two years.
  • Non-certified pay range: $18–$24 per hour; certified: $20–$28 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Operate lensometer and other optical tools to ensure proper patient fittings.
  • Educate patients on lens options and help select frames and lenses.
  • Assist patients with frame selection considering medical and lifestyle needs.
  • Process spectacle orders: data entry, invoicing, patient communication.
  • Maintain inventory and handle payments and reconciliations.

Description

This position performs several duties including design, measure, order, dispense, fit and adapt lenses and frames for patients according to written optical prescription or specification. This position requires a significant amount of multitasking and the ability to prioritize tasks appropriately. A team mentality with a willingness to help wherever needed is a must.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate manual lensometer and other tools to achieve proper fittings for patients
  • Educate patients on their corrective lens options and help them make a choice that fits their medical needs as well as lifestyle preferences
  • Provide honest but compassionate feedback about aesthetic choices in frames
  • Achieve sales goals as determined by admin staff while attending to patients’ specifics needs and desires
  • Processing of spectacle orders including: data entry, mail, neutralization of prescription, accuracy of invoicing verified, patient communication.
  • Maintaining frame boards inventory, miscellaneous inventory, case supply, tools and parts.
  • Receiving of payments, collecting of payments, reconciliation of all invoices received.
  • Cash drawer balancing and deposit preparation
  • Data-entry into EHR
  • Sales representative meetings/relationships
  • Willingness to be of assistance wherever needed most
  • Proper handling of protected health information
  • Work Location: This role involves working at multiple clinic locations. Employees must be willing and able to work at any of our three clinics based on operational needs
Requirements

High School Diploma/GED Equivalent

Preferred qualifications:

2+ years’ experience in opticianry

Certifications from the American Board of Opticianry. Employees will have the ability to obtain Certification within two years.

Non-Certified Optician pay range: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour

Certified Optician pay range: $20.00 - $28.00 per hour

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Intricate understanding of optics
  • Proficient use of optical measuring devices
  • Ability to manipulate small tools
  • Good time management abilities
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, email (and EHR a plus)
  • Self-motivated with a team attitude
  • Detail orientated
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks based on importance
