SpaceX is seeking an optical engineer in Redmond, WA to design, analyze, validate, and operate free-space optical systems for laser communications on Starlink satellites. You will lead architecture definition, verification testing, and field testing of optical experiments and systems, coordinating with software, manufacturing, and reliability teams.

The role requires a physics/engineering background, hands-on optics experience, and programming proficiency in C++, MATLAB, or Python.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in physics, CS, EE or related STEM field.
• 2+ years hands‑on optics, photonics, laser tech, or precision design/testing.
• 1+ years programming in C++, MATLAB, or Python.

Responsabilités

• Apply optics and photonics knowledge to optical system development, including design, analysis, and validation
• Represent the optical system in program-level trades and issue resolution
• Define requirements for high-performing optical systems in challenging environments
• Lead optical architecture definition through trades, concepts, and risk testing
• Participate in verification testing, including environmental qualification and performance characterization
• Define and lead field testing of optical experiments and laser communication systems
• Review test data and lead anomaly investigation and resolution
• Maintain link budgets, design specs, and system capabilities data
• Interface with manufacturing and supply chain to ensure designs can be built
• Collaborate with software and automation teams to develop automated testing tools
• Represent laser comm systems in reliability discussions with teams, management and vendors
