Overview:
Our client is seeking an experienced Optical Network Engineer with deep expertise in DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) to support the design, implementation, and maintenance of our regional optical transport network. This role is critical to ensuring the scalability, performance, and reliability of our fiber infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Design, configure, and deploy DWDM transport systems across metro and regional networks
- Support field teams during installation and maintenance of optical equipment including muxponders, transponders, amplifiers, and ROADMs
- Analyze fiber performance, including OSNR, light levels, and link validation through fiber testing
- Troubleshoot and resolve Layer 1 transport issues in coordination with internal teams
- Maintain detailed documentation including network diagrams, circuit layouts, and equipment configurations
- Collaborate with NOC, Field Technicians, and Engineering teams to support service delivery, upgrades, and expansions
- Perform hardware/software testing in lab environments for new technologies and features
- Contribute to network capacity planning and project-based infrastructure initiatives
Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with DWDM transport platforms in a telecom or ISP environment
- Strong understanding of fiber optic systems and transport technologies
- Comfortable working in lab and field settings
- Strong understanding of optical networking principles, including DWDM, OSNR, dispersion, and attenuation
- Practical experience with transport platforms such as Ekinops, Nokia, Ciena, Infinera, Cisco NCS, or ADVA
- Proficient in using fiber testing tools like OTDRs, light meters, and optical spectrum analyzers
- Basic familiarity with Layer 2/3 networking concepts (a plus)
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills with keen attention to detail
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills
- Experience creating network diagrams using Microsoft Visio (preferred)
- Local to the Pittsburgh area (or looking to reloccate)
Education & Experience:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent industry experience
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience working with DWDM systems or in an optical transport role
- Prior experience in a telecommunications, ISP, or carrier network environment is strongly preferred
